Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: What is the Secret Menu Item for the Normal Gym Test

Discovering the Secret Menu Item is essential to completing your journey in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. We've got all the details here.

Midway through your adventure in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, you’ll need to take on Larry, the Gym Leader in the city of Medali, northwest of the Great Crater of Paldea. To face him, however, you have to pass his Gym Test, which has you searching for the Secret Menu Item of the Treasure Eatery.

You’ll be tasked with hunting down clues throughout the town to uncover the answer. We’ll cover where you need to go to get the answers as well as the solution itself in this guide.

Normal Gym Test Secret Menu Item

When you arrive in Medali and head into the Gym, you can accept the Gym Test to receive your task: discovering the Secret Menu Item at the Treasure Eatery on the northeast side of town. You’ll be told to ask the patrons of the restaurant what they know about the Item, called “how the regulars season their dishes,”

The Test is more of a treasure hunt than a quiz, and the first place you’ll want to go is Treasure Eatery itself. However, don’t speak to the waiter at the restaurant immediately, as that will start the question-and-answer portion.

Instead, head to the bar at the back of the room and speak to the man in the black suit for your first clue. He’ll tell you, “a nice squeeze of lemon gives any dish a refreshing kick,” with lemon highlighted in red. There’s one part of the answer: lemon.

Leave the Eatery and go back into the city. The remaining clues are out there, and so are three Gym Trainers who give you hints on how to find the clues you want. You’re welcome to fight them for the EXP and PokeDollars, but the other clues you want are perfectly learnable by wandering about.

Where you go next is up to you, but one of the most obvious places to look is the cabbie with the big blue bird on his head. The bird also talks. If you hang around it long enough, it will speak another word highlighted in red: “Meedyum.” There’s your second part of the Menu Item: medium.

For your third clue, you’re looking for an ice cream stand with something out of place on the menu. The stand you want is in the northeast part of town. Go into the vendor’s inventory, and at the bottom, you’ll see an item that is certainly not ice cream: grilled rice balls, another part of the Secret Menu Item.

The third and final clue is at the southwestern part of town. You’ll see a circular set of stairs leading down into a large drain hole in the wall. Defeating the Gym Trainer nearby says you should look for “a dark spot surrounded by stairs,” precisely where you are.

Head down to the grate and interact with it to receive the message “There’s some faint writing here. It says, “Fire Blast.”

That’s your final piece of the Secret Menu Item. Time to head back to Treasure Eatery.

Speak to the waiter, and he’ll ask you four questions. Ultimately, you’ll want to say a medium serving of grilled rice balls, Fire Blast style, with fresh lemon.

Giving this correct answer to the Secret Menu Item triggers a short cutscene where the restaurant dining area transforms into a Gym battle arena. You’ll then receive the Gym Test Passed screen, and you’ll be able to return to the Gym staffer to challenge Larry properly.

And that’s what you need to know about the Secret Menu Item for the Gym Test. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have a lot going on as a different take on the mainline Pokemon experience. Check out our Scarlet and Violet guides on some of the game’s more quirky aspects.
