Destiny 2 Lightfall: How to Complete the Maelstrom Quest

Tackle the Maelstrom quest in Destiny 2 Lightfall's endgame.

You’ll unlock a ton of additional content after finishing the Destiny 2 Lightfall campaign. One of them is a quest chair for the Archivist of Neomuna, restoring the servers that contain the memories of five famous Cloud Striders. One of these, Maelstrom, has some of the least clear requirements and will likely be one of the longer quests you’ll need to do in the expansion. We’ll cover all the details of how to complete the Maelstrom quest here.

How to Complete the Maelstrom Quest in Destiny 2 Lightfall

There are four steps in the Maelstrom Quest in Lightfall, but only two take any significant effort: the first two. You’ll spend at least an hour or so in the current Vex Incursion Zone because that’s the only place to find what you need to progress the quest.

Maelstrom Step 1

There are two tasks for this step.

Defend the Vex Incursion Zone

You’ll be doing Patrols, Public Events, and Terminal Override activities, and if you can double up on them, do so.

  • Patrols give 4% progress.
  • Heroic Public Events 12%.
  • Terminal overrides 20%.

Doing multiple tasks at a time will make the process significantly faster.

This task will take the longest. Green, glowing tangles of Strand energy, the Strand sources, will spawn at specific locations across the current Vex Incursion Zone. They stick around for about a minute before disappearing. If you don’t find the current one in that timeframe, you’ll need to wait at least five or more minutes for the next one to appear.

Strand sources will be marked on your HUD with a star symbol and you’ll need to interact with them as you did in the campaign to progress the quest. Unfortunately, they are sometimes out of the way or spawn in the middle of heavy fighting, especially during Terminal Overload activities. Grab them wherever you see them.

Maelstrom Step 2

The easier of the two active tasks for the Maelstrom quest, you only need to complete the Lost Sector in the current Vex Incursion Zone. There’s one per play area on Neomuna.

  • Hydroponics Delta in the Zephyr Concourse
  • Gilded Precept in Ahimsa Park
  • Thrilladrome in Límíng Park

Maelstrom Step 3

Return to the Hall of Heros and reconstruct Maelstrom’s server.

Maelstrom Step 4

Return to Quinn Laghari, the Neomuna City Archivist, for the next step: Bluejay.

Now you’ve completed one of the more tedious steps in the quest to earn the right to start another quest, called Strider, that will earn you the Winterbite Stasis Exotic Heavy Glaive. If Stasis is your jam, you’ll want that Exotic.

That’s all you need to know about how to complete the Maelstrom quest. For more Exotic quest guides like Gjallarhorn, Vex Mythoclast, Dead Messenger, and others, check out our Destiny 2 guides hub.
