Scarlet Dawn takes place a few years after The House of the Dead 4, and players can take on the role of either new protagonist Ryan Taylor or returning character Kate Green. The two player characters are on an undercover mission at the Scarecrow’s Mansion when a villain known only as The Mystery Man releases his legion of undead creatures on the unsuspecting populace.

The game features English audio containing the cheesy dialogue the series is known for, and may be released outside of Japan at some point in the future. The previous game in the House of the Dead series, The House of the Dead 4, was first released in arcades in Japan on July 2, 2005, for location tests and was released nationwide on December 30, 2005. The game was later released in arcades in North America and Europe throughout 2006. A PlayStation 3 version of The House of the Dead 4 with PlayStation Move compatibility was released in North America on April 17, 2012, in Europe on April 18, 2012, and in Japan on April 19, 2012. The PlayStation 3 version of the game also included two special stages from The House of the Dead 4 Special, an arcade attraction released in several locations which makes use of two screens and various effects.

House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn is currently only playable at select arcades in Japan.
