Abiotic Factor isn’t a particularly hard game, but it can be a lot to take in all at once if you’re new to the genre. What makes this game so unique is the mix of co-op survival elements with a story-driven structure that oscillates constantly between comedy and horror. If this lethal blend has you struggling, our Abiotic Factor beginner tips and tricks are for you.
Beginner Tips and Tricks for Abiotic Factor
In this guide, we’ll teach you how to get your adventure started on the right foot. That said, we will keep some things a mystery for now. Some essential aspects of the game, like learning to cook and feed yourself, will only become essential later on. You’ll have plenty of time to try and figure things out by yourself. If you can’t, we have a guide just for that.
The first step into the game is, obviously, creating a character. Or, if you’re playing with friends, creating a balanced group of survivalist scientists.
Character Creation Tips for Abiotic Factor
There are two important aspects in creating a character: Jobs and Traits. Together, those define which skills and activities your character is better at. Selecting the Somatic Gastrologist and the Hobbyist Chef, for example, will make you an unparalleled cook.
Here are some roles you should have in your party:
- A Cook.
- A Fighter (maybe even more than one).
- A Medic.
- A Crafter (though everyone will need to do some crafting).
- A Farmer.
Combining Jobs and Traits is really not that difficult: just maximize whichever skill you want to specialize in, and you’re done.
As far as Negative Traits go, there is one clear winner: Weak Bladder. Toilets everywhere and the Toilet Need increase is very small. And besides, not fulfilling this need is currently the only way to create Poop, which is essential for farming. Dry Skin is also pretty good. It ups your Water Need significantly, but you can boil tainted water to purify it in a few minutes.
A word of advice: don’t pick Defense Analyst as your job, especially if you’re playing with friends. Not only is this the only job that comes with a negative trait, it’s a pretty bad one, too. Slow Learner, which the Defense Analyst is forced to take, lowers incoming all experience points gained by 20%, making sure this character’s skills will lag behind the others.
Which Materials Should You Get First in Abiotic Factor?
The world is full of scraps, but you only have so much space in your inventory. So which kind of scrap should you prioritize in the early game?
There are four items you’ll want to craft as soon as possible: a Crafting Bench, some Storage Crates, a Heater, and a Makeshift battery. The first will help you craft more items, the second will let you store scrap safely, and the third will keep you warm at night. The Battery will let you use items at night, when the power goes out.
Here are all the materials needed to craft those items:
Crafting Bench | 4 Duct Tapes, 1 Power Supply Unit, 2 Metal Pipes |
Storage Crate | 2 Wooden Planks, 2 Plastic Scraps |
Heater | 3 Coils, 4 Case Fans, Pressure Gauge, 1 Oil |
Makeshift Battery | 1 Energy Bricks, 1 Coil, 2 Metal Scraps |
Finding materials isn’t very difficult. Coils, Power Supplies, and Case Fans can be found by breaking some computers and their monitors. You can get Plastic and Metal Scraps, just like Wooden Planks, by breaking down plastic, metal, and wooden objects respectively.
But how do you break stuff into crafting materials? The most reliable way is to just hit them with a Pipe Club until they break. You can build one with just a disassembled pipe and some glue. This item will break easily, and you’ll need to find the anvil to be able to repair items. You should definitely make more than one Pipe Club if you can.
Exploration Tips for Abiotic Factor
Exploration in Abiotic Factor is rarely safe, especially when you’re just entering a new area. But old areas can be surprisingly dangerous, too. Even if you’re backtracking, looking for some supplies you might have missed the first time through, respawning enemies will keep you on your toes.
That’s why you should always be properly equipped when exploring. Here are some things you should always have with you:
- Bandages, to avoid bleeding out.
- Throwing Nets, to make combat safer.
- Armor, to avoid the worst of it.
- A Water Bottle, if you can find/craft one.
- A Backpack, the largest you can find.
Everyone in a team should have all of these items with them. If your team is large enough, you can probably leave some water bottles and bandages at your base. Either way, at least one person in your team should always carry one of the vital items. Vital items in Abiotic Factor are:
- A Screwdriver, to build and fix stuff.
- A Flashlight, ideally more than one.
- A Melee Weapon, accompanied by a Shield.
- A Ranged Weapon, including ammo.
- Healing Supplies, from Healing Syringes to Splints.
