Baldur’s Gate 3: Benefits of Being an Origin Character Explained

Should you be an Origin character? What are the benefits of them in Baldur's Gate 3? Find out here.

Larian has provided plenty of character creation options and customization possibilities with its grand CRPG. One of those is your provenance, which you’ll choose early in the process. Like some other choices, this one seems important, and there are several options to choose from. These all have specific actions, cantrips, and more. With the wealth of choices available, you may be wondering about the benefits of being an Origin character in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Benefits of Choosing an Origin Character in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 Origin characters are pre-made options that let you experience the story with their background, personality traits, and specific default actions, cantrips, spells, and more. This means that you’ll have unique options for dialogue, interactions, and connections with other Origin characters, depending on who you choose, such as Wyll hunting Karlach.

What’s more, BG3 Origin characters can be companions if you don’t select them during character creation (you can choose to not have a pre-determined background). However, the exception is The Dark Urge, which can’t be found as a companion, though the Origin can be fully customized.

Benefits of Choosing The Dark Urge Origin in BG3

The Dark Urge Origin gives your character violent thoughts and unclear memories of a bloody past, which leads to unique cutscenes and dialogue options. These will challenge you when thinking about the possible consequences of what you choose to do on your journey. They also have wide-ranging effects that can drastically alter your playthrough.

Some players in the community, including some of our very own writers, don’t prefer The Dark Urge Origin because of the narrator and the possibility of compromising a playthrough. Though, I made a Warlock with The Dark Urge Origin after putting in some time on another character, and I’m having more fun with it compared to my original Custom Origin character. If you’re curious, start a new character with the Origin and play for a few hours to see if you like it.

Lastly, there are other Dark Urge NPCs to found throughout Baldur’s Gate 3, so you’ll be able to get a small taste of the Origin when encountering them in the world.

Those are the benefits of being an Origin character in Baldur’s Gate 3. The choice gives the possibility of receiving more information about that character, their history, and their views of the world. The Dark Urge, too, offers a unique gaming experience that I’ve found worthwhile. But you may want them as romance options instead of playing as them, and we have BG3 guides for that, as well as topics like how to remove party members.
