Best Locations to Build a Base in Once Human

Here's how to build a homestead that will be the envy of the entire server!

One of the most interesting features of Once Human is its base-building system. It takes inspiration from other games, refines the system, and implements it in a way that’s rich with features, all while being incredibly easy to learn and fun to use. With that being said, here’s how to scout out a good location for a base and how to build one.

What Are the Best Locations to Build a Base In Once Human?

With how popular the game has become, it can be a bit difficult to find a good location that hasn’t already been taken. Still, if you adhere to the following principles, you should be able to find a good piece of land.

  • Find a spot that doesn’t have any teleportation towers – Whenever you’re in a new zone, try to build your territory in a spot that doesn’t have a fast travel point nearby and let your base be that point. This will make traversal across the zone easier for you in the future.
  • Build on cliffs, not under them – If you’re on a PvP server, cliffs are your best friend, as they serve as a natural barrier against attackers. Similarly, if you build a base underneath a cliff, attackers can use that to destroy your base.
  • Build on leveled terrain – The game’s build system is good, but it isn’t perfect. One of its major issues is how finicky it is with elevation. If you start building on an incline, you’ll likely find that half of your territory will be unavailable for building.

Once you’ve found a good location, here are some rules for building the perfect base.

Tips for Building the Perfect Base in Once Human

The trick to building the perfect base in Once Human is efficiency. Each part of your compound should be built with a purpose in mind. Functionality trumps aesthetics every time.

Make Sure You Have a Wood Supply Nearby

Before you even put down your plot, make sure you have a steady supply of wood nearby. Wood is the single most important material when building a base, as it makes up the majority of your construction materials and camouflages your base. Hence, forests are one of the best spots for building a base in Once Human.

Elevation is Your Friend

When building a base in Once Human, 9 times out of 10, building high is better than building wide. It’s much harder for an enemy to raid your base if they have to surmount multiple levels than if they had to overcome just one. It’s the reason why I built my base on a platform without stairs, so that the enemy has to climb up, giving me a few extra seconds to blast them on the way up.

Install Ambush Spots

The best way to defend a base isn’t with defenses but with ambush spots. Stairs are a particularly effective place to set up an ambush, as most players won’t be expecting it. Long corridors are also advised as they’re an equally effective spot to set up an ambush and maybe even a few traps.

Protect Your Valuables

There are two things within your territory that you must never lose: your territory terminal and your loot chests. The best way to protect these is to hide them behind a wall or under the floor where the enemy can’t find them.

The second best way to protect them is to create fakes that serve as bait. You can’t really do that with the terminal, but you can do it with your chests. Keep your precious loot where your stash is, and keep a few chests with junk loot in the open to serve as a diversion.

With these tips in mind, you should be able to create an impregnable fortress in no time. Don’t forget to check out our Once Human guide hub for more useful tips and tricks.
