Dragon’s Dogma 2 is definitely one of the biggest action RPGs of 2024. If you’re looking for a similar experience to this gameplay, then check out my list of the best games to play, like Dragon’s Dogma 2, including some obvious choices as well as a few surprising titles.
Dragon’s Dogma 2: Top 10 Best Similar Games List
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen
The closest you’ll ever get to the feeling of Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the previous installment in the series Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen. It includes all the DLCs for the first game and a whole new questline, which takes place on the Bitterblack Isle. That’s why I highly recommend Dark Arisen, as it contains an extra 10-15 hours of gameplay. Both the original game and the sequel have very similar gameplay features, so be sure to check it out if you’ve missed it.
Dragon Age: Inquisition
If you love the fantasy setting of Dragons Dogma 2 with its magic, dragons, and strong RPG elements, then you’ll love Dragon Age: Inquisition. However, the combat in Dragon Age: Inquisition is more tactical rather than action-based. This game mostly focuses on turn-based mechanics and a heavy reliance on companions. I also noticed that Dragon Age: Inquisition has a strong focus on story and character development.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
There’s probably no need to introduce a game as universally acclaimed as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The decisions you make throughout The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt‘s story seem far more impactful, and there’s also a much stronger emphasis on narrative. Note that there’s lots of swordplay in Wild Hunt, as well as a strong focus on alchemy, while Dragon’s Dogma 2 combat is more action-based.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Besides the obvious similarities between The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Dragon’s Dogma 2, both games feature vast and expansive open worlds that are a delight to explore. If you like the freedom of reaching the far edges of the map, then Skyrim is the game to pick from the bunch. There isn’t much grappling or climbing in Skyrim, but combat involves tons of melee and ranged weapons, including lots of magic options.
Final Fantasy 16
Final Fantasy 16 is one of the biggest action RPG games of 2023, with vast lore and exploration opportunities. Note that the combat system for Final Fantasy 16 was designed by Ryota Suzuki, known for his work on Devil May Cry 5. So expect lots of flashy, action-heavy combat with massive combos. If you like this sort of thing in your fantasy RPG setting, then you’ll be more than happy.
Elden Ring
What if your open-world RPG was filled with puzzles and mysteries? That’s why Elden Ring is considered one of the most cryptic action RPGs in years. Although Dragon’s Dogma 2 isn’t nearly as brutal as the Soulslike games, if you feel like putting on a more challenging game, then Elden Ring would be a great choice. I love the adventurous atmosphere of Dragon’s Dogma 2 a lot, but at times, the dystopian world of Elend Ring can be just as engaging for me.
Monster Hunter Rise
Since both Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Rise games have been developed and released by Capcom, they feature lots of similarities. Some of them include a party system, fighting large monsters and creatures, and action-oriented combat. But there really isn’t that much storytelling in Monster Hunter Rise, which I found to be more focused on finding weapons, fighting monsters, and crafting armor. It also has more restrictions when it comes to movements and hitboxes.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning
If you like the premise of Monster Hunter Rise but wish it had an open world similar to Dragon’s Dogma 2, then check out Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning. But I must warn you that Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning has much more repetitive gameplay with fewer exploration and discovery points. However, the story and the lore are rather rich and engaging. So I’d recommend this game to those who’re looking for an easier action RPG experience.
Horizon Forbidden West
If you’d like to shift your perspective into the far future rather than the past, then one of the best alternatives to Dragon’s Dogma 2 would be Horizon Forbidden West. It features a huge open world with lots of futuristic elements, although its RPG mechanics are a lot simpler than those of DD2. Still, it offers a fantastic gameplay experience, which has generated so much buzz upon its release.
Nioh 2
The final game on my list features a heightened focus on combat mechanics and everything that revolves around them. Once again, the RPH mechanics in Nioh 2 aren’t as rich as in Dragon’s Dogma 2, but there’s plenty to explore and loot. I’d recommend Nioh 2 to players who love real-time action-based combat with strong Japanese samurai aesthetics.
That’s it for my list of the best games to play, like Dragon’s Dogma 2. Stay tuned for more DD2 tips and tricks articles, including a guide on how to complete the masquerade.
