Your Genshin Impact team’s DPS might be the star of the show, responsible for massive damage numbers, health bar deletions, and other satisfying effects. However, your main DPS won’t be doing much of anything without an equally powerful Support squad around them, whether they provide buffs, healing, or some combination of the two.
The Best Support Characters in Genshin Impact
I’m not going to rank the support characters here; I am presenting them in alphabetical order. I’m also not including Sub-DPS or off-field DPS characters here. Instead, only true supports who enable DPS characters but don’t have much or any damaging capabilities of their own. To avoid a C6 Kokomi situation where a support suddenly becomes a DPS, any 5-star character I list will use neither their Constellations nor their signature weapon. Any character becomes worthwhile
Baizhu
Liyue’s resident eccentric (doctor), Baizhu is also one of Genshin Impact’s most effective healers when he’s on your team, too. Of course, in 2024 Genshin, Baizhu’s healing isn’t the only reason to put him on your team. His extraordinary ability to apply Dendro damage to enemies makes him a fantastic addition to any Blood, Hypberbloom, or Burgeon team.
Bennett
Will any character overtake Bennett as the Pyro support in Genshin Impact? The survey says: probably not. His Elemental Burst not only provides an absurd amount of healing as well as a substantial attack boost to whoever is in the field it creates. Even half-built, Bennett can have his Burst up essentially forever, as the cooldown of both it and his Skill — which directly feeds his Burst — is very, very short. It’s, therefore, much harder for almost any enemy to down a member of your team as long as Bennett’s around.
Jean
Though she’s been somewhat eclipsed by newer healers, Jean remains one of the better Support characters in Genshin Impact. And unlike Qiqi, losing your 50/50 to Jean is by no means a bad thing. Not only does she have solid healing that scales off of her Attack stat, but she also offers more consistent access to Anemo and Swirl if you don’t have another character on this list. Speaking of whom…
Kazuha
If Kazuha could heal, you would never need another Support, or something close to it. As it stands, his ability to group enemies, activate Swirl with his Skill, and spread other types of elemental damage with his Burst makes him something of a monster. On top of it all, he’s incredibly easy to build, provided you can find pieces with Elemental Mastery as their main stat. Even if you can’t, Kazuha’s sheer utility makes him worthwhile to have in any team composition you could think of.
Kokomi
Funny story: Kokomi was my first ever 5-star character and she carried my sorry butt through almost the entirety of Genshin Impact’s Archon story quests. Now she powers some of my Hyperbloom teams, and I sometimes use her where she isn’t optimal simply because I like how comfy her kit is. Speaking of kits, Kokomi can be a Hydro DPS if you invest enough into her, but I like her ability to singlehanded save my team from certain death by summoning a cute Jellyfish with her Burst.
Nilou
Nilou is the Hydro applicator among Hydro applicators, capable of ensuring every enemy in your current zip code is in a constant state of…having Hydro active on them. Outside of that role, she’s not quite as useful, but ask anyone who uses her for her main settled-on purpose, and I bet they’d be hard-pressed to give her up. Between her Skill and Burst, there shouldn’t be a moment Hydro isn’t on the field.
Sucrose
Don’t have Kazuha? Sucrose will suffice. Her kit is almost a mirror of his, though a bit smaller and it provides a bit less overall utility. The Elemental Mastery buffs from her Passive abilities are the main differentiator between her and her 5-star counterpart, them and her her relative ease of access. As a 4-star, you have a chance to get Sucrose with every 10 pulls on the standard banner, whereas Kazuha is limited to 21-day periods every few months.
Venti
The Anemo Archon and the OG grouping god, Venti remains a powerhouse with a use case almost as universal as Kazuha’s. One of the primary differences is in their access to enemy grouping. Venti needs to use his Burst to suck in enemies, whereas Kazuha’s Skill leaves his Burst open to do additional work. That doesn’t mean Venti isn’t worth a pull — he totally is, especially if you don’t have Kazuha, Jean, or Sucrose. Even if you do have them, Venti remains a fantastic addition to most teams.
Xianyun
Xianyun, or Cloud Retainer as you meet her during the Liyue Archon Quest, is not only a fantastic support, providing team-saving heals, but also reinvigorated interest in some other 5-star characters. Her Burst empowers Plunging Attacks, giving new life to Diluc and Xiao enjoyers, but opening up opportunities for any character with a worthwhile plunge. That she is also an Anemo character, and can thus cause Swirl reactions is a nice bonus.
Zhongli
No best Genshin Impact Supports list would be complete without the Geo Archon Zhongli. His shields make having a healer in your party a moot point. No need to heal when your team never takes damage, after all. That he makes content as comfortable as possible with the press of a button is frankly a bit silly, but you won’t find anyone who has him on their team complaining when his shields stop what would otherwise be a one-shot kill.
Those are my picks for the best Support characters you can use in Genshin Impact. Yes, most of them are limited 5-stars, but welcome to gacha games. There are plenty of players who only pull once every few months — and some never at all — who can get through the game using only what you get for relatively free.
