Make the best of your combat resources with this list of the five best Synergy Abilities in Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth.

How do you make combat cinematic and functional at the same time? The answer for Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is Synergy Abilities: attacks where two characters team up, usually deal tons of damage, look amazing, and come with great effects. This guide lists the best Synergy Abilities in the game.

Best Synergy Abilities for Each Character in FF7 Rebirth

It’s tough to categorize the best Synergy Abilities because, beyond the buffs they grant, their damage is fairly uniform across character combinations. However, there are a few choices that not only do that good damage but also provide additional utility by keeping characters at range or allowing them to close the gap for more melee-focused characters. There are also some Synergy Abilities that just look cool, and I’ll always give extra points for style or silliness — even more for both.

This list goes over five of the best Synergy Abilites available in Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth, ranked by their usefulness, aesthetic, and availability during the campaign, in that order.

5. United Refocus – Any Two Characters

United Refocus is probably the most boring Synergy Ability in Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, as every pair of characters can get it, the animation is short and relatively tame, and its effect is powerful, but not nearly as much as the others on offer. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it, of course. Having three ATB bars, even temporarily, can turn even the hardest boss fights on their head, but those three ATB bars also won’t singlehandedly win the fight for you. Usually, anyway.

4. Synchro Cyclone – Cloud and Tifa

As one of the first Syngergy Abilities available in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Synchro Cyclone has to be one of the better ones — and it is. It combines fantastic damage, enemy knockdown from charge-up attacks, and the unlimited MP/zero MP cost buff. Plus, it looks awesome and deals fantastic damage comparable to either Cloud or Tifa’s level one Limit Break. There are technically better Synergy Abilities in the game, but this one remained a favorite throughout my playthrough.

3. Firework Blade – Aerith and Cloud

The main reason I’ve ranked this one in the middle is I don’t really care for Aerith’s playstyle. More importantly, because Firework Blade keeps both Cloud and Aerith at range, Cloud will need to spend time returning to the fight once the Synergy Ability ends. Besides keeping Aerith relatively safe, the other main draw of Firework Blade is the Limit Level increase, granting access to Aerith’s Planet’s Protection Limit that makes the entire party temporarily immune to damage.

2. Sweet-and-Sour Salvo – Aerith and Barret

There’s so much to love about this Synergy Ability. From the fun Barret and Aerith have performing it to its ability to boost your damage and extend Stagger time, Sweet-and-Sour Salvo is just fun to use. It’s also practical, as it keeps both characters at their preferred distance from the enemy and ensures Barret, the tank of the group, is close to Aerith, who crumples at the slightest tap from a larger enemy.

1. Relentless Rush – Cloud and Tifa

While it isn’t the flashiest of Tifa or Cloud’s Synergy Abilities, Relentless Rush is both the most practical and aesthetically awesome of the group. First and most importantly, it allows both characters to quickly close the gap to an enemy, making their biggest weakness — range — a moot point for the duration of the attack. Second, it’s an attack boost, Stagger extension Synergy Ability. And because it puts Cloud and Tifa back in their effective range, you can even follow it up with a Limit Break or powerful weapon like Cloud’s Infinity Edge, doubling your damage output for the cost of a single Synergy Ability.

There are dozens of additional Synergy Abilities available in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, and all of them have their uses, especially as you add more characters to your party and experiment with party composition and… synergy. Which you settle on will depend on which characters you enjoy playing, which you want to build a relationship with, and other factors unique to your own playstyle. This list consists of Synergy Abilities I used time and again, no matter what stage I was at in the adventure.
