Best Way to Get Ship Upgrade Materials in Star Wars Outlaws

Ship combat and exploration are almost as important to the gameplay of Star Wars Outlaws as the on-planet activities. And you should really consider upgrading your ship to take on the tougher enemies you’ll encounter in the void. Here are the best ways to get ship upgrade materials in Star Wars Outlaws so the Trailblazer is always ready for a new challenge.

How to Easily Get Ship Upgrade Materials in Star Wars Outlaws

There are two main ways to get ship upgrade materials in Star Wars Outlaws: buying them or finding them on-planet or in space. And as clear-cut as that sounds, there’s a bit more to both methods. The vendors that sell ship upgrades are almost universally faction-based.

That means if you have a Poor or worse reputation with a faction, say, the Crimson Dawn, not only will the vendor not deal with you, but those faction areas will be hostile. In other words, everyone will shoot you on sight.

Finding the upgrade materials can also be a lottery if you’re on-planet. Not only are the materials a one-time reward from a treasure location or other loot pickup but there’s no guarantee that what you find won’t be a generic valuable or blaster upgrade material. I have found Enhanced Durasteel Hull parts and Quadanium in treasure chests and vendor inventories, but never in the quantities I needed to upgrade the Trailblazer.

With that in mind, the best way to get ship upgrade materials is to loot them from defeated pirates and loot chests in space. Fighting and defeating hostile pirates is a more lucrative farm for upgrades because they respawn after a time, and you can usually find them in places where loot would be anyway. At first, you’ll want to stick to frigates and other smaller ships, as the Trailblazer without upgrades is an easy target. Eventually, you’ll be able to take on cruisers and larger vessels that not only drop better materials but also more of them.

Space loot chests are the other way to get lots of easy, high-quality materials for your ship. The instant you can explore the space around Toshara, head there and use your ship scanner to pulse the area, then head to any point of interest. The Wreck Cluster is a good starting point. Once you reach the location, scan again for items of interest in local space. Loot chests will appear with icons showing opened boxes or groups of open boxes for larger quantities of loot.

Once you have a chest in your sights, approach within a few fractions of a distance unit, then press the Interact Key to retrieve the items. If the item is of a particular size or value, you’ll need to hold the button down for a couple of seconds. Either way, you’ll wait another few seconds for your ship’s tractor beam to pull in the materials. Space loot chests are not renewable resources as far as I can tell, but pirates and other enemy factions are.

In short, if you want the best possible way to get ship upgrades, go into space and loot everything there, then defeat all the enemy ships you can find. You need to know a bit about dogfighting to effectively farm hostile forces, but once you get it down, it’s not a huge deal.
