Darkest Dungeon 2: How to Complete Vestal Chapter 4 Divine Intervention in DD2

Here's how to complete Vestal Chapter 4 Divine Intervention in Darkest Dungeon 2.

The Darkest Dungeon 2 Vestal story may be one of the first Hero Stories you complete when visiting the Shrine of Reflection. With a wide range of useful skills, I knew I wanted to focus on unlocking her background. Chapter 4, titled Divine Intervention, is a bit tricky to survive. However, I learned the ins and outs the hard way, so you don’t have to. Here’s our guide on how to complete Vestal Chapter 4: Divine Intervention in DD2.

How to Complete Vestal Chapter 4 Divine Intervention in Darkest Dungeon 2

The battle scene for Vestal Chapter 4 takes place in a torture room, with a man who appears to be a Flagellant before his blight as your enemy. Set to be punished for indulging in pleasures the church deems wrong, our Vestal is ready to fight for her freedom and defeat the Torturer.

She starts combat with three skills:

  • Fend Off: 2-4 DMG, Forward 1
  • Ministrations: Heal 10%, Remove Bleed
  • Brace: Gain Block, Resist Bleed by 70%

There are a variety of ways you can start the fight, either by attacking the Torturer or using Brace against his attack. Either way, you’ll take damage and potentially stack Bleed. Ministrations will help as it cures Bleed and heals, but the fight may go longer as you’re not doing any damage in the first couple of rounds.

If just attack the Torturer with Fend Off, you’ll be dead before you can make a decent dent in his health. What you want to look out for is a divine ray of light that shines down on a rank. Moving to the light gives you Conviction, as well as the Judgement skill. It can be used from any rank and hits the first two enemy positions.

  • DMG: 6-10
  • Conviction x2: Heals 30%
  • Conviction x3: DMG +100%

Whether you use Judgement right away or wait for it to stack, you’ll need to move from spot to spot as the light moves. Judgement is the quickest way to defeat the Torturer. I personally use it as soon as I have it — without stacking Consecration. This can be especially effective if you’ve only used Brace at the beginning of combat and have taken little damage so far.

DD2 Vestal Chapter 4 Reward

Once you’ve defeated the Torturer, you’ll be free to escape. As a reward for completing Divine Intervention, you get the Consecration of Light skill.

  • Marks a position, not the ally
  • Grants Strength (75%) or Crit (25%) to the ally on Turn Start

This is the second Consecration skill that can be used to stack damage and additional effects for the Vestal. If you’re running Seraph, having both Consecration skills equipped can potentially mean two stacks of Conviction every round, depending on turn order.

That’s how to defeat the Torturer and successfully complete the Vestal Chapter 4 hero story in Darkest Dungeon 2. If you’re struggling with other hero chapters, like the Jester’s, or need assistance beating lair bosses, check out the rest of our DD2 guide collection.
