Auto Rifles have always been in a weird place in Destiny 2. They’re rarely the best option in any scenario, but neither are they the worst choice you could make. The Duty Bound, a Nightfall-specific Legendary Auto reissued from way back in the Curse of Osiris expansion, falls squarely in the “good but not great” category of an already middle-of-the-road weapon class. Equip it with any of the perks in this guide, however, and it can compete with some of the better weapons in most other categories.
Duty Bound Auto Rifle PvE God Roll
The PvE and PvP loadouts for the Duty Bound share a lot in common, so expect to use similar rolls for both activity types. There are a few differences, particularly in the second Trait column, but the weapon is quite consistent with a few of the options presented here.
Barrel: Arrowhead Brake, Corkscrew Rifling
Choosing between Arrowhead Brake and Corkscrew Rifling is difficult as both offer fantastic benefits. Arrowhead’s huge buff to your Recoil control alongside its modest Handling bonus is difficult to pass up.
Still, the overall controllability offered by Corkscrew’s Handling, Stability, and Range buffs are also well worth your time.
Magazine: Accurized Rounds, Tactical Mag, Appended Mag
Range and controllability will always be part of an Auto Rifle’s downfall, and Accurized Rounds cuts into the first problem very well.
Tactical Mag is an excellent secondary option for its mild increases to the rounds in your magazine, Stability and Handling. Appended Mag is a workable third-tier option for its larger increase in magazine size.
PvE Trait 1: Perpetual Motion, Stats for All
There is almost no weapon in Destiny 2 that does not benefit from Perpetual Motion. You get a small bonus to Stability, Handling, and Reload Speed after just a few seconds of movement. That buff triples after ten seconds.
Stats for All offers Range, Stability, Handling, and Reload Speed, provided you can hit three enemies in quick succession.
PvE Trait 2: Rampage, One-for-All
Rampage is a classic Destiny 2 perk, and it’s never gone out of style. Quickly kill three enemies for an up to 33% damage bonus to your weapon.
One-for-All is a newer but no less helpful perk, offering a 35% damage bonus for 10 seconds after hitting three separate enemies. Combine it with Stats for All, and who knows how effective you’ll be.
Duty Bound Auto Rifle PvP God Roll
PvP with an Auto Rifle is part situational awareness, part aim, part bravery. You’re not always going to win an engagement at mid-range where your weapon excels, and don’t expect to compete with Scout Rifles or SMGs at long and close ranges, respectively. But with a little luck and a bit of skill, you can dominate lobbies with the humble Duty Bound Auto.
Barrel
The PvE choices work fine in PvP as well.
Magazine
Your PvE options are perfect for PvP too.
PvP Trait 1: Perpetual Motion, Zen Moment
Perpetual Motion remains a powerful option, as you’re almost always going to be on the move, and the Stability, Handling, and Reload Speed buffs will constantly be active.
Zen Moment helps you stay on target with an increasing reduction to your recoil the more damage you do to a target.
PvP Trait 2: Vorpal Weapon, Dynamic Sway Reduction
You’ll be surprised how much damage you can do to an enemy in their Super with a Vorpal Weapon-equipped primary. With Duty Bound, you can do it from ranges most roaming Supers can’t immediately deal with, putting you at a strange but not unwelcome advantage.
Dynamic Sway Reduction increases your gun accuracy the longer you fire it, meaning you’ll be on target longer and more consistently for most engagements.
While Duty Bound isn’t the best weapon in Destiny 2 or even the best in the Nightfall loot pool, if you manage to get your hands on it with the rolls presented in this guide, it can compete with most other guns in the game.
