Diablo 4: How to Find and Farm Forgotten Souls

Forgotten Souls are an important upgrade ingredient in Diablo 4.

In Diablo 4, Forgotten Souls are a necessary upgrade component for Sacred and Ancestral Items. Higher level endgame gear, you need to have access to World Tier 3 in order to obtain them. Here’s how to farm for Diablo 4 Forgotten Souls.

Where to Find Forgotten Souls

There are two main methods to obtain a Forgotten Soul.

  • Salvaging Legendary items: Typically gives a Forgotten Soul per item salvaged
  • Helltide Events: Can obtain Forgotten Souls through a variety of methods

Helltides are the main way to get Forgotten Souls, especially enough to upgrade your gear. These events occur randomly throughout Sanctuary and last for an hour once they start. They’re only available on Worlds 3 and 4 which require you to finish the main campaign before getting access, along with other requirements.

How to Farm Forgotten Souls

When a Helltide event is announced, you’ll want to stock up on Elixirs, Incense and Health Potions then head into the fray. With only an hour to farm for resources, you need to make the most of it. The Helltide area is marked in a dark red color and blood rains from the sky.

During this time, defeat as many enemies as possible without dying to obtain Aberrant Cinders. These are a special form of currency used to open Helltide Chests. These chests provide you with a Sacred Item but also resources, including Forgotten Souls. The amount of Aberrant Cinders needed vary chest to chest and if you die you’ll lose part of the ones you have.

Another way to get Forgotten Souls during a Helltide event is to complete events within the Helltide Zone. The chest rewarded for completing the event may hold Forgotten Souls. While wandering the area during Helltide, and trying to stay alive, keep on the lookout for Screaming Hell Veins, which appear like ore veins but with various colors in them. They almost always drop Forgotten Souls when opened. I found two in the image above when interacting with one.

Interacting with Screaming Hell Veins and opening Helltide Chests are the two most reliable Helltide Event methods of farming for Forgotten Souls. They are a rare component, however, so you’ll probably need to participate in a couple Helltide Events before being able to upgrade all your gear.

That’s all you need to know about Forgotten Souls and how to farm for them in Diablo 4. For more walkthroughs, item locations, or how to complete certain quests, check out the rest of our D4 guides.
