Some of the gear and items you find don’t need to be salvaged; they’ll be an upgrade you can equip immediately. But if you’re looking to break gear and items down, you’ll need to understand the salvage mechanic.

How Salvaging Gear and Items Works in Diablo 4

Once you’ve found gear and items to salvage, go to any city and head to the blacksmith. There, you’ll be able to choose what you want to salvage. You can salvage items in three ways:

  • Individually by item.
  • By rarity (all Common, Magic, and Rare items).
  • All items in your inventory at once.

You can also choose to salvage gear and items you’ve marked as junk. You can mark an item as junk by opening your inventory, mousing over the item you want to mark, and pressing the space bar if you’re playing on PC.

The easiest way to salvage gear and items is to click the “salvage item” button at the blacksmith — the Pick Axe icon — and then simply break down the things you don’t want.

Be careful, though. As far as we can tell, there’s no way to get an item back if you salvage it by mistake.
