Disney Dreamlight Valley provides you with a Royal Shovel, Pickaxe, and Watering Can for your farming adventures. Here's how to upgrade your Royal Tools.

Disney Dreamlight Valley is a farming life sim game, so of course, it involves using various tools to harvest materials. You will have your Royal Tools from the beginning of the game, but you will need to upgrade them as you continue to play so that you can break barriers within biomes, and harvest all available materials. This guide will show you how to fully upgrade each of the Royal Tools: The Shovel, The Pickaxe, and The Watering Can.

How to Upgrade the Royal Shovel

When you first have the Royal Shovel you are able to dig holes, and that’s about it. There are three available upgrades for the Royal Shovel, here’s how to complete them.

Tree Stump Shovel Upgrade: 

  • Unlock the Forest of Valor for 3,000 Dreamlight.
  • Unlock Anna from the Frozen Realm Castle door for 4,000 Dreamlight.
  • You will need to bring Anna to friendship level 2 to unlock her Icy Invitation quest and gather the following materials:
    • 10 Softwood
      • Available throughout the Valley.
    • 4 Hardwood
      • Available in the Forest of Valor.
    • 4 Iron Ingots
      • Crafted from 5 Iron Ores and 1 Coal.
    • 3 Tinkering Parts
      • 1 Tinkering Parts requires 2 Iron ore. 

Apply the enchantment to upgrade your shovel, you can now remove and harvest hardwood from tree stumps of any size.

First Wildebeest Bones Shovel Upgrade:

  • Unlock the Sunlit Plateau for 7,000 Dreamlight.
  • Unlock Scar.
    Complete the Nature and Nurture quest, and the Friends Aren’t Food quest.
  • Receive the Breaking Bones quest from Scar and gather the following materials: 
    • 5 Lion’s Claws
      • Dig them up near the Sunlit Plateau cliffs.
    • 5 Dry Wood
      • Foraged in the Sunlit Plateau.
    • 5 Iron Ingot
      • Crafted from 5 Iron Ores and 1 Coal.

Craft the Lion’s Claw Shovel Head and apply it from your inventory. You can now clear small Wildebeest Bones in the Sunlit Plateau. 

Second Wildebeest Bones Shovel Upgrade:

  • Reach level 7 Friendship with Scar and complete all previous quests.
  • Initiate The Circle of Life quest and gather the following materials:
    • Old Bones
      • Gathered from Sunlit Plateau Mines.
    • 10 Purified Night Shards
      • 1 Night Shard is crafted from 5 Night Shards and 1 Dream Shard.
  • Turn the gathered items into Ashes at Scar’s Volcanic Geyser.
  • Plant and water the Ashes until they are ready, and harvest the Flower of Bones.

Craft the Roaring Shovel Head and apply it from your inventory. You can clear Wildebeest Bones of any size, and clear the large Wildebeest bones blocking the bridge in the Sunlit Plateau.

How to Upgrade the Royal Pickaxe

When you first obtain the Royal Pickaxe you are able to harvest ore and gemstones from Mining nodes throughout the Valley. There are four available upgrades for the Royal Pickaxe, here’s how to complete them.

First Sea Debris Pickaxe Upgrade:

  • Unlock Moana Realm for 3,000 Dreamlight.
  • Complete Moana’s questline to bring her to the Valley.

Maui will upgrade your Pickaxe during Moana’s initial questline. You can now remove and harvest Sand from the Sea Debris.

Second Sea Debris Pickaxe Upgrade:

  • Reach level 4 Friendship with Maui and complete all previous quests.
  • Initiate A Tale of Stone And Fire quest with Maui and gather the following materials:
    • Scraping Stones
      • Found in Moana Realm
    • Make any five-star meal
      • Find recipes in your menu collection

Once you give these items to Maui, he will once again upgrade your Royal Pickaxe. You can now clear the large Sea Debris blocking the bridge on Dazzle Beach.

First Ice Shard Pickaxe Upgrade:

  • Unlock the Frozen Realm for 3,000 Dreamlight.
  • Bring Elsa and Anna to the Valley.
  • Initiate Elsa’s Breaking the Ice Quest and gather the following materials:
    • 5 Sunflowers
      • Foraged from Dazzle Beach.
    • Vial of Ocean Water
      • Gathered from Dazzle Beach dock shoreline.
    • 5 Lemons
      • Foraged from trees in the Forest of Valor and the Glade of Trust.
    • 2 Sugarcane
      • Purchased from Goofy’s Dazzle Beach stall.
    • 3 Garlic
      • Foraged from the Forest of Valor.

Craft the Warmth of Summer enchantment, and and apply it from your inventory. You can now remove and harvest snow from the small Ice Shards.

Second Ice Shard Pickaxe Upgrade:

  • Complete Elsa’s What Home Feels Like quest to unlock The Singing Ice quest.
  • Gather the following materials for The Singing Ice quest:
    • Craft a bouquet for Elsa: 
      • White Daisy 
        • Foraged in the Peaceful Meadow
      • Red Falling Penstemon
        • Foraged in the Plaza
      • Pink Bromeliad 
        • Foraged in the Sunlit Plateau
    • 5 Ice Chunks
      • Gathered in Ice Cavern
    • Vial of Freezing Water
      • Gathered from River in Frosted Heights
    • 3 Snow
      • Harvested from small Ice Shards

Craft the potion and give it to Elsa, she will upgrade your pickaxe. You are now able to clear the large Ice Shards blocking the bridge in the Frosted Heights. 

How to Upgrade the Royal Watering Can

When you first obtain the Royal Watering Can you are able to water your crops. There are currently two available Royal Watering Can upgrades that will prove useful in the Glade of Trust, here’s how you unlock them.

First Mushroom Watering Can Upgrade:

  • Unlock the Glade of Trust for 5,000 Dreamlight.
  • Reach level 8 friendship with Merlin and complete all previous Friendship quests.
  • Initiate the Dark Experiment quest and gather the following materials:
    • 20 Mushrooms
      • Foraged from the Glade of Trust
    • 5 Emeralds
      • Mined from nodes in the Forest of Valor and Glade of Trust
    • 3 Purified Night Shard
      • 1 Night Shard is crafted from 5 Night Shards and 1 Dream Shard

Return to Merlin with the materials and he will upgrade your Royal Watering can. You can now remove small Purple Mushrooms, which will drop edible Mushrooms.

Second Mushroom Watering Can Upgrade:

  • Reach level 10 friendship with Merlin and complete all previous Friendship quests.
  • Initiate Merlin’s Final Trial Quest and gather the following materials: 
    • 5 Purified Night Shards
      • 1 Night Shard is crafted from 5 Night Shards and 1 Dream Shard
    • 25 Mushrooms
      • Foraged from the Glade of Trust
    • Falling Water
      • Gathered from the southern waterfall in the Glade of Trust
    • Ice Heart
      • Ice Heart Seed received from Merlin, plant, and water it, it will be ready to harvest within moments.

Craft the potion and apply it to your Royal Watering Can. You can now remove Purple Mushrooms of any size, and clear the large Mushrooms blocking the bridge in the Glade of Trust.
