Call of Duty Warzone, the series’ latest take on battle royale, was one of the worst-kept secrets of the past several months. But now that the stand-alone game is finally here, it looks like the F2P title won’t be 100% free for everyone.
So do you need to subscribe to PlayStation Plus or Xbox Live Gold to play Call of Duty Warzone after you’ve downloaded it? Yes and no.
Speaking with IGN, Activision said that PlayStation players will get a proverbial leg-up when it comes to the game. Specifically, they won’t have to have a PlayStation Plus membership to log in and play.
PlayStation does not require a PS Plus membership to play other F2P titles such as Apex Legends or Fortnite.
Alternatively, Xbox One players will be required to subscribe to Xbox Live Gold in order to play Call of Duty Warzone, just as they are for other battle royale titles. Currently, an Xbox Live Gold membership is $9.99 for one month, $24.99 for three months, and $59.99 for 12 months.
Though PlayStation has received content first in the past, 2019’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare saw post-launch content release in tandem across all platforms. And while this isn’t necessarily the same as getting content first, it’s certain to leave some Xbox players out in the cold.
