Shortly after joining the Scions of the Seventh Dawn and defeating Ifrit, you select a Grand Company to join. This opens up plenty of in-game features such as mounts and retainers so you can sell items on the Marketboard. But does it matter which Grand Company you join in FFXIV?
FFXIV: Does Your Grand Company Choice Matter?
FFXIV has three Grand Companies:
- Twin Adders of Gridania
- Maelstrom of Limsa Lominsa
- Immortal Flames of Ul’dah
While they’re presented as being different, the differences between them boil down to aesthetic preferences. Items like weapons and gear that you purchase from the Grand Company match that group’s style and aesthetic theme. Even if you join PvP activities, you join a random company for each round so the wait times are much shorter. So, no, it doesn’t matter which Grand Company you join in FFXIV.
Grand Companies Can be Switched Later
Additionally, you’re able to switch to a different Grand Company once you hit the rank of Second Lieutenant in your original company. All your seals are saved, and you maintain your rank in the new company. Then, the only penalty you receive is being unable to switch Grand Companies again for two weeks. As such, there’s no pressure when deciding which Grand Company you want to join since it’s not a permanent decision if you don’t want it to be. I chose the Maelstrom simply because I started in Limsa Lominsa as an Arcanist.
And that covers if it matters which Grand Company you join in FFXIV. The benefits you get from any company are more important than the finer details of each individual one, especially since it opens the ability to get a mount, sell items via Marketboard, and buy a player house.
