Don’t Step The White Tile Guide to Improving Your Score

Tips to increasing your chances of getting a high score in the new app Don't Step the White Tile!
This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

Don’t Step the White Tile is one of the newest apps climbing up to the top of the app charts. Putting itself in the ranking of apps like Flappy Bird and Smash Hit. While the game is fairly simple to play it is also very confusing due to some of the instructions, since the app was originally made for a Japanese audience.

There are three main modes of gameplay in this puzzler: Time Attack, LongRun, and StoppingJust. The names themselves don’t really give you much to go on so I will explain each mode and share some tips I found especially helpful in increasing the number of tiles I was able to press.

Time Attack

The objective of this mode is to make your way through the obstacle of tiles to reach the other side.

There are a few tricks to this mode that make avoiding those white tiles a little easier. First it’s best to stop trying to calculate youre moves, there is no specific strategy for tapping the black tiles but the app will respond to any speed with virtually no static movement.

In order to get to the yellow finish line faster you need to loosen up your tapping. You can do this by either setting your device on a table and using one finger to tap on the black columns or you can use both thumbs and use both hands to your advantage. I found that the way I held my phone was the determining factor as to how fast I was able to go. So find a comfortable position and with practice Time Attack will get easier and smoother.

LongRun

The goal of this mode is to tap as many black tiles as you can in 11 seconds. This mode is something you might want to attempt after having practice with the previous mode.

LongRun is fast. If you get to 50 tiles in under 11 seconds more time is added and you can continue until you don’t make it to the 50 tile increments.

You also need more accuracy in this mode because of all of the factors working against you. Many people have found that laying their phone down on this mode helps them to avoid the mess up when the time notification scrolls across the screen.

StoppingJust

Stopping just before 10 seconds is up is the name of the game. This mode has multiple aspects you have to keep an eye on. You have to watch the time while trying to get the most amount of tiles in the time allotted.

This mode is definitely one that is for the more seasoned players. If you’re finding this mode too difficult you should go back to the other modes for a bit. Once you’re comfortable, moving onto this mode is okay.

The trick to StoppingJust is that there is a timer that disappears after 5 seconds so you have 5 MORE seconds that you have to gauge yourself. I would suggest purposely losing, so that you get a feel for how long 5 seconds really is, then once you think you’ve got the hang of it try stopping just before it would reach 0.

Also, do not count down the time in your head. As good of a strategy as that sounds it actually slows you down and therefore you get to tap less tiles.

If all else fails and you find yourself not improving and your eyes start to hurt, take a break! Come back to the game once you’ve had time to relax from the frustration.
