There is only one way to upgrade the Blades of Chaos in God of War: Ragnarok, and that is to find all eight Chaos Flames, special materials scattered throughout the story and a few optional sidequests post-game. Finding them all will allow you to increase the Blades’ power to Level 9, inflicting massive amounts of Runic burn and opening up new abilities in the weapon’s skill tree.
This guide will show you all Chaos Flame locations in God of War: Ragnarok, including their exact spots on the map.
Chaos Flame Location #1
The very first Chaos Flame can be obtained during the second story mission, “The Quest for Tyr.” This mission takes you to The Forge in Svartalfheim. Early in the area, you will fight a Dreki mini-boss; it’s part of the critical path and impossible to miss. Defeat to snag your first Blades of Chaos upgrade material.
Chaos Flame Location #2
You won’t get your next Chaos Flame until Chapter 6: The Reckoning. Here, you will travel to Freyr’s Camp in Vanaheim. Start your journey with Freya, and travel northeast. You will come to an area with a Forest Ancient mini-boss. Once again, defeat the mini-boss for the upgrade material.
Chaos Flame Location #3
The next Chaos Flame will require you to enter the Well of Urd, which is found in a secret passage in the north/northwestern portion of Midgard, at the end of the valley leading northwest from the Lake of Nine.
You will come here during the ninth story mission, “The Word of Fate,” where you must face the Frost Phantom mini-boss, which drops the third Chaos Flame after being defeated.
Chaos Flame Location #4
During Chapter 13, “Creatures of Prophecy,” you will return to Freyr’s Camp in Vanaheim. You will have to fight a Dreki across the river from where you fought the Forest Ancient, but this time on the other bank of the river. If you manage to defeat this mini-boss a second time, it will drop the fourth Chaos Flame.
Chaos Flame Location #5
You will reach Sutr’s Forge in Muspelheim during Chapter 16, “The Summoning.” Here, you will fight two Soul Eater bosses. Your reward is another Chaos Flame.
Chaos Flame Location #6
This upgrade takes some time to retrieve. First, you must find the two Muspelheim Seed halves, then complete The Crucible Favor. Once complete, you will need to unlock a chest at the spot indicated on the map above and collect the sixth Chaos Flame.
Chaos Flame Location #7
You will gain access to The Sinkholes area of Vanaheim after completing the Scent of Survival Favor, which requires Kratos to chase Helka and ride the paper boat into the crater. Once inside The Sinkholes, you will find the tomb of the Berserker. Defeat the Berserker for the next Chaos Flame.
Chaos Flame Location #8
The eighth and final Chaos Flame can’t be found in a single location like the others. Instead, you must hunt down all six Chaos Sparks from the six Draugr Holes throughout the game.
Once all six holes are found and all Hatefuls are defeated, the rewarded Chaos Sparks will be combined into a single Chaos Flame, which will allow you to upgrade Blades of Chaos to their Level 9 maximum.
Draugr Hole Location #1
The first Draugr Hole can be found at the Watchtower in the Bay of Bounty, Svartalfheim.
Draugr Hole Location #2
The second Draugr Hole can be reached on the east of the Applecore, also in Svartalfheim.
Draugr Hole Location #3
Travel to The Barrens in Alfheim, and you will find another Draugr hole on top of a small cliff on the western side of the area.
Draugr Hole Location #4
The next location can be found at the Lake of Nine in Midgard, close to the King’s Grave.
Draugr Hole Location #5
From there, visit the Abandoned Village in Vanaheim.
Draugr Hole Location #6
Finally, find another Draugr Hole at The Crater, which is located in the northern portion of Vanaheim.
