Introduction

In Heroes of the Storm, Malfurion is a ranged support with a versatile kit that heals, gives mana, controls, and damages. Malfurion can either play as a pure support or a support with a focus on crowd control depending on how you build his talents.

Malfurion is a great laning party for almost any other Hero. Due to his support nature, it is not advisable to have him solo a lane unless necessary.

Starter Abilities

  • Innervate (D)
  • Cooldown: 30 seconds
  • Activate to increase an ally’s mana regeneration.

  • Regrowth (Q)
  • Cooldown: 7 seconds
  • Heal an ally or self over time.

  • Moonfire (W)
  • Cooldown: 3 seconds
  • Reveal and damage enemies in an area.

  • Entangling Roots (E)
  • Cooldown: 12 seconds
  • Root and damage enemies in an area.

Heroic Abilities (Choose One)

  • Tranquility (R)
  • Cooldown: 100 seconds
  • Heals all allies in a large radius over time.

  • Twilight Dream (R)
  • Cooldown: 90 seconds
  • Silences and slows all nearby enemies. Deals damage over time.

Talents (Choose One from Each Tier)

Tier 1

  • Path of the Wizard: Your Hero gains an extra 5 Mana and 0.2 Mana Regen for every level gained.
  • Moonburn (W): Damage against minions, mercs, and structures increased by 30%.
  • Harmony (Q): Each pulse of healing on Minions or Mercs returns 10 mana to Malfurion (a maximum of 50.)
  • Healing Ward: Place on the ground to heal allies in an area for 1.95% of the max Health every second for 10 seconds.
Tier 2

  • Vengeful Roots (E): Using Entangling Roots also summons a Treant that deals 20 damage and lasts for 12 seconds.
  • Shan’do’s Clarity (Trait): Innervate’s Cooldown is 10 seconds faster and grants mana twice as fast.
  • Versatile (Trait): Innervate also increases the target’s attack speed by 10% for its duration. This also allows you to cast it on non-mana users.
  • Shield Ally: Places a protective shield on an allied Hero, protecting them from 300 damage before breaking. Lasts for 5 seconds.
Tier 3

  • Battle Momentum: Basic Attacks reduce your Ability cooldowns by 0.5 seconds.
  • Enduring Growth (Q): Increases the duration of Regrowth by 6 seconds.
  • Elune’s Grace: Increases the range of Regrowth, Moonfire, and Entangling Roots by 2.
  • Calldown: MULE (Thumbail Missing): Repairs the target structure, granting it health and ammo over 30 seconds.
Tier 4

  • Tranquility (R): Heals 40 Health per second to nearby allies over 10 seconds.
  • Twilight Dream (R): After a short delay, deals 100 damage in a large AoE. Targets are silenced for 3 seconds.
Tier 5

  • Full Moonfire (W): Increases the area of effect by 50% and reduces mana cost to 10.
  • Life Seed (Q): Casting Regrowth on a target with full health will delay the healing over time effect until they have taken damage.
  • Shrink Ray: Activate to reduce an enemy Hero’s damage by 50% and Movement Speed by 50% for 4 seconds.
  • Ice Block: Activate to place yourself in stasis and gain invulnerability for 3 seconds.
Tier 6

  • Lunar Shower (W): Using Moonfire reduces the cooldown of your next Moonfire by 0.5 seconds. Stacks up to 3 times. Lasts for 8 seconds.
  • Hindering Moonfire (W): Moonfire slows targets by 20% for 2 seconds.
  • Rewind: Activate to reduce the cooldown of your Basic Abilities by 10 seconds.
Tier 7

  • Bolt of the Storm: Activate to teleport to the target location.
  • Storm Shield: Activate to give you and nearby allied Heroes a Shield for 20% of their max health for 3 seconds.
  • Serenity (R): Increases the healing amount by 25% and grants 5 mana per second.
  • Nightmare (R): Afflicted enemies are also slowed by 50% and the duration is increased to 4 seconds.

Talent Builds

Pure Support Malfurion
  • Path of the Wizard or Healing Ward: PotW is the best choice in nearly all circumstances, but if your team plans on doing a fight for a watchtower or an early game gank, placing down the HW might help you get first blood.
  • Shan’do’s Clarity (Trait) or Versatile (Trait) or Shield Ally: If you have a lot of mana users or are laning with a mana user, Shan’do’s Clarity is great. If your team doesn’t use much mana and has mostly non-mana users, Versatile or Shield Ally are the better options.
  • Enduring Growth (Q): Gives you better heals.
  • Tranquility (R): This is the Heroic Ability better suited for support Malfurion.
  • Life Seed (Q): This is great for using before a team fight or if you are passing between lanes and just want to help out an ally.
  • Rewind: Never know when you’re going to need emergency mana or heals.
  • Serenity or Storm Shield: Either of these will suffice, although Serenity is the better choice if your team mostly uses mana.

This build largely ignores any talents that increase damage or give crowd control in favor of building Malfurion as a pure support. This build will start off strong in the laning phase and finish strong when you deal with pushes and team fights. You will not be able to contribute much in the way of DPS, however.

Crowd Control Malfurion
  • Path of the Wizard: You’re going to need as much mana as you can for spamming your spells.
  • Vengeful Roots (E): You will be using this spell a lot, so you might as well deal some extra damage with it.
  • Elune’s Grace: Increased range is always welcome.
  • Twilight Dream (R): The perfect CC for a team fight. This will let you silence characters like Elite Tauren Chieftain who might use their Heroic to disrupt your team’s coordinate in the fight.
  • Shrink Ray or Full Moonfire (W): Full Moonfire goes well with your next talent; Shrink Ray is great for crippling an enemy in the middle of a fight.
  • Hindering Moonfire (W): With Full Moonfire and Hindering Moonfire, you can spam your W and slow enemies all day.
  • Nightmare (R): This is the kind of Heroic Ability you plan team fights around.

Crowd Control Malfurion is a force to be reckoned with. Not only do you have the base healing and mana abilities Malfurion’s kit comes with, but you have enhanced CC abilities that let you completely control team fights.

Malfurion Playstyle Tips

Team Fight Champion
  • Most characters have Heroics that they can use in 1-on-1 fights. Malfurion’s Heroics should really only be used in team fights due to their AoE buff or debuff nature.
  • Try to avoid going into a Team Fight without your Heroics.
Innervate is Inner-great
  • Innervate costs no mana.
  • Innervate gives mana.
  • More mana for no mana.
  • Keep it on cooldown.
Safety in Numbers
  • Malfurion is a support and should always be with another Hero, healing them and restoring their mana.
  • Malfurion does not have the kind of kit to fight 1-on-1 with.
  • Entangling Roots is your only mechanic for escaping.
  • Do not overextend without having complete map awareness.
