The dodge roll is one of two primary defensive moves in Hogwarts Legacy, the other being the Protego magic shield. Dodging is important because not every attack can be blocked by Protego, with some enemy moves better avoided by rolling out of the way. You’ll need to master it to win duels and concrete some important subquest challenges.
Hogwarts Legacy Dodge Rolling Explained
What Button is Dodge Roll?
Dodge Roll is mapped to the following buttons in Hogwarts Legacy:
- PlayStation: Circle
- Xbox: B
- PC: Ctrl
If you want to assign it to another input, here’s how to change controls in Hogwarts Legacy.
How to Use Dodge Rolling
You’ll be taught how to dodge roll enemy attacks early on, within the first several storyline quests. It’s also necessary to know how it works to complete some subquest challenges for spells like Expelliarmis from Hecat, which require you to Dodge 10 enemy attacks.
All difficulties present you with a glowing red halo around your witch or wizard when you can dodge. On Story and Easy difficulties, this also includes a button prompt appearing and slowing time. Normal and Hard difficulties remove the button prompt (leaving the halo) and drastically reduce the amount of time you have to initiate a roll before getting hit.
It’s worth mentioning that you can also dodge roll out of a Protego prompt, though you’ll lose the buffs that Protego provides.
Like many modern RPGs, dodging is an important defensive tool against both ranged and melee attacks, specifically the area-of-effect (AoE) types that appear in Hogwarts Legacy. It’s also good for creating space between enemies when necessary.
Further, dodging can help you get a bit more momentum in some environmental puzzles, such as those where the floor falls out from underneath you (though it won’t help if you run into the free fall glitch, unfortunately).
While the dodge roll doesn’t have the capability to stun opponents with Stupify like Protego does, and it’s not so in-depth as to call for invincibility frame (i-frame) knowledge, it’s a useful tool to use and understand in the framework of the Wizarding World.
