How to Unlock the Unlocking Spell, Alohomora

NPCs mention Alohomora, and even use it during various quests before the player is presented with an opportunity to learn the spell. After completing Percival Rackham’s trial, the player will receive an owl from Gladwin Moon, Hogwarts’ caretaker. This will trigger the side quest “Caretaker’s Lunar Lament,” during which the player is taught Alohomora.

Meet Gladwin Moon and he will give you the task of collecting Demiguise Moons from Demiguise statues during the night hours. Knowing the location of two statues in the faculty wing, Gladwin Moon teaches the player alohomora to unlock the entrance door to the wing.

Throughout the faculty wing will be plenty of opportunities to practice using Alohomora. For the quest you need to stay invisible but in general you do not need to sneak around when unlocking doors or chests. Go up to the door and interact with it to trigger the mechanic pictured above.

Move the green ring around until the green cogs in the bottom right corner start consistently spinning. Repeat for the red ring, who’s cogs are located in the center of the lock. When both sets of cogs are spinning, wait a moment and the lock will unlock.

You may notice that you can’t use Alohomora on some locks. Locks are separated into three levels. When first taught, the player can only unlocked level one locks. When the player returns to Gladwin Moon after obtaining both the faculty wing Demiguise Moons, he will explain that after collecting more moons he will teach you the upgrades to the Alohomora.

How to Unlock Level Two Locks

After the “Caretakers Lunar Lament” quest is complete, you can take on the quest “The Man Behind the Moons”.

To be able to unlock level two locks, players must return nine Demiguise Moons, which is tracked by this new quest. The counter only records how many moons have been returned to the caretaker, not how many the player has collected.

Once nine moons are returned, the counter resets as a new part of the quest line initiates, showing 13 moons need to be returned. Once complete, Mr. Moon will upgrade Alohomora again, allowing all locks to be breached.

Getting Alohomora is necessary before completing all Arithmancy Doors, having access to all areas for Daedalian Keys, and more. If you found this guide helpful, take a look at some of our other Hogwarts Legacy guides such as how to get large pots or our enemy weaknesses guide.
