Once you’re in the true ending area Unmoored World, you’ll have to complete red beam event boss fights to stave off the brine fog. The ones at Vermund and Volcanic Island are against purple Dragon Purgeners. Here’s how to beat the Vermund and Volcanic Island Purgeners in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
How to Beat Purple Dragon Purgener in Dragon’s Dogma 2
Unlike regular bosses, Purgener bosses don’t take damage unless you hit their purple/pink weak spots that are strewn across their bodies. Most of these are covered by brine at first, but as you destroy them, more begin to be revealed. I must point out that you shouldn’t Grapple or climb weak spots that are still under brine since that will immobilize and eventually kill you. The Dragon Purgener’s weak spots are located on the following body parts:
- On its front legs.
- On its back along its spine (More are revealed once you destroy the first set near the tail).
- On its throat.
- The crystal on its head is the final weak spot accessible once all others are destroyed.
Note that there are two of these bosses, one at the Vermund and one at the Volcanic Island red beam. That said, both work the same way and have the same stats and weakpoints.
Strategy for Killing Purple Dragons in Dragon’s Dogma 2
The general strategy is to focus on the weak spots on its front legs and then climb the back near the tail with Thieves, Fighters, and Mystic Spearhands. Archers and Magick Archers can shoot down the weak spots quite easily. Sorcerers and Mages can blast them with AOE spells and hit multiple at once.
Warriors will struggle in this fight since the Dragon moves around a lot, and your climbing attacks are subpar, so I don’t recommend this vocation in this boss fight. If you still want to play it, take Mountain Breaker and Heavenward Sunder to try to hit as many weak spots as possible while swinging upwards. In fact, any mobility skill like Skullsplitter from Thieves or Cloudward Slash from Fighters works well here.
As you destroy weak spots, more will appear on its back as the brine recedes. Each set you destroy staggers the Purgener Dragon, which opens it up for easier hits, especially for Warriors. That’s why I highly recommend you bring Dwarven-enhanced weapons to this fight for easier staggers.
Step by Step Guide for Killing Purple Dragons (Purgener)
Here are some general tips for the Dragon Purgener boss fight:
- You’re safest when you’re climbing the Dragon since this allows you to avoid all of its attacks; just don’t climb on the brine.
- Once it starts shooting, energy blasts from its mouth don’t stand in the explosion since they have an aftershock explosion.
- You can easily avoid its breath attack and swipes by standing to the side of it or behind it.
- Once it flies up and starts charging, run back and use ranged attacks if you have them until massive cyclones appear. You can either run around and dodge them or approach and climb the dragon at its tail.
- Bring Mage pawns with Argent Tonic for healing.
- Bring Panaceas and Stamina curatives since you’ll be climbing a lot with most vocations.
- Make sure to have the best weapons and armor for your vocation, either from the main city merchants or the Wyrmcrystal gear from the Dragonforged. I also recommend upgrading them with Wyrmfire.
- An Arrow of Unmaking instantly kills this boss.
