Batman and Telltale are back together again on Steam, in a new story packed with bat rogues, plot twists, and more people “remembering that” than you can shake a question-mark-shaped stick at.
But the biggest impediment to Batman dispensing justice in Batman: The Enemy Within isn’t Joker or Killer Croc — it’s an all-too-common black screen error. This is a returning Bat-fiend too, as the game’s predecessor was also plagued by a similar issue. Thankfully, the vigilantes here at GameSkinny have already cleared up this caper for you, meaning you can get back to kicking Riddler into a pile of trash cans that much quicker.
Keep reading this guide to see how you can fix this common black screen error for The Enemy Within. There’s a few potential ways to troubleshoot it, , as may be related to one of many issues in the game.
Troubleshooting the Black Screen Error in Telltale’s Batman
Fix 1: Turn Off Steam Overlay
The first thing you should try is turning off the Steam Overlay. For this, all you’ll need to do is pop into Steam, and follow these instructions:
- Click the “Steam” option from the menu in the top left
- Go to “Settings”
- In the window that pops up, select “In-Game”
- You’ll see a checkbox that says “Enable Steam Community In-Game”
- Uncheck this box and save your settings
Once you’ve done that, try running your game. If you don’t get the black screen, congratulations! You solved the issue. But if it still persists, don’t worry — we have other methods you can try.
After all, Batman doesn’t give up when the first thing doesn’t work.
Fix 2: Tweak Nvidia Settings
For some users, Batman: The Enemy Within has an odd predilection for defaulting to Intel graphics, which causes Nvidia users to have the black screen issue as well.
To fix this problem, you’ll need to tweak your settings in Nvidia:
- Open your Nvidia Control Panel
- Click Manage 3D Settings. From here
- Click Add Game
- Add Batman: The Enemy Within
You should also make sure that you change your preferred graphic processor to “High-performance NVIDIA processor”.
Once you’ve done all that, save your game and test it. Hopefully that clears everything up. But if you’re still having no luck, there’s one final option to try.
Hit this bug harder than Batman is about to hit Riddler.
Fix 3: Turn Off Steam Cloud Sync
Another possible cause for this issue is Steam Cloud not syncing the game properly. So with a little tweaking in your Cloud settings, you might be able to get rid of the black screen for good. Here are the steps you need to take:
- Right click on Batman: The Enemy Within in your games list
- Click “Properties”
- In the updates tab of this new window, find the section on Steam Cloud
- Uncheck the synchronization box
Now test the game again. If you’ve followed all the steps here, your game should be working again. Now get in there and show Riddler who Gotham’s Greatest really is!
