How to Rescue the Magistrate in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Here's how to find and rescue the Magistrate in Dragon's Dogma 2.

Rescuing the Magistrate Waldhar is one of the many main quests you’ll get from Captain Brant. The quest involves a prison break and also finding some ancient ruins later on. Here’s how to rescue the Magistrate in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Where is the Magistrate in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Magistrate Waldhar is located in the Vernworth Gaol prison system, which is accessible from the slums area. That said, before rescuing the Magistrate, I would also finish the Find Malcolm quest since finding Malcolm and the ancient library is related to getting the Magistrate to leave the prison, as you’ll see below.

As for the rescue, Captain Brant will give you a key. Use this to enter the Gaol by going to the slums and then taking the right down the stairs. From there, you need to climb onto a stone slope with a locked iron door at the top. The key will get you through, and you’ll enter the prison area while your pawns wait outside.

Climb up the stairs while ignoring the guards, who’ll, in turn, ignore you. Once you’re at the top, make a right, and there’ll be another set of doors you need to unlock with the same key. Beyond them is the actual prison area with eight cells and three guards. I found out the guards won’t be hostile until you actually try to open a prison door.

The Magistrate is in the last cell on the left from where you entered.  As soon as you try to open the door or talk to one of the prisoners, the guards will attack. I recommend attacking them first since defeating them doesn’t have any story consequences. While there are only two in the main cells area, there’s a heavy armor one roaming in the room above.

Once you defeat them, unlock the Magistrate’s cell and talk to him. The conversation ends with him stubbornly telling you that he won’t leave unless you find him a study full of books to relocate to. To find this study, you need to find Malcolm.

How to Convince the Magistrate to Leave the Prison in Dragon’s Dogma 2

The only way to get the Magistrate to leave the prison is to find the ancient underground library through the Find Malcolm quest. You discover this forgotten study with Kendrick and Malcolm. After telling Magistrate Waldhar about it, he’ll agree to leave the prison.

From here, you need to escort him out of the jail. I recommend unlocking the first cell in his row (the one three cells down). Inside you’ll find a crumbling wall you can break. Leave through the destroyed wall with Waldhar and take a right down the tunnel. This will lead you outside, where he’ll thank you, and the quest will end. You can now return to Captain Brant for the reward. Also, I went back to visit Waldhar the next day in the ancient library beneath the crumbled tower in the slums and he gave me his own personal quest.

That concludes my guide on how to rescue the Magistrate in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Check out more of our Dragon’s Dogma 2 guides like the best pawn vocations to hire.
