How to Romance March in Fields of Mistria

March may seem hard to please, but underneath the tough exterior is a big softie.

Fields of Mistria offers up a cast of totally swoon-worthy marriage candidates, and March has proven a standout bachelor upon the game’s early access launch this week. Following first impressions, it’s clear the hot-headed blacksmith has a major chip on his shoulder when it comes to outsiders. Of course, this is more or less a front, and he takes a liking to the new farmer with some strategic gift-giving. The key to his heart? Chocolate, and lots of it. Here’s everything you need to know to romance March in Fields of Mistria.

Fields of Mistria: March Romance Guide

As with most farming and life sims, there are several key components to growing closer to the residents of Mistria: giving gifts, unlocking heart quests, and chatting up your favorite townies when you have the chance. March is no exception to the rule. He may seem hard to please, but underneath the tough exterior is a big softie. Skip ahead with the quick links below or follow along to take your relationship to the next level.

March has a major sweet tooth and goes for anything chocolate, from a piping cup of hot chocolate loaded with marshmallows to a simple slice of chocolate cake. In my experience, these rich desserts are the safest bets when it comes to getting on his good side. Of course, he also takes pride in his work as a blacksmith, making ore and ingots great gifts, too. You’ll get bonus points for birthday gifts, to boot, so be sure to keep your best finds on hand and mark your calendar for Spring 16.

I’ve only unlocked a couple of his loved gifts so far, so I’ll update this section with more details as I continue my playthrough. However, you can score a significant heart boost in the meantime by gifting him the Scent of Spring at the Spring Festival. While this event-exclusive item isn’t listed among March’s loved gifts, its description promises its scent is loved by everyone in Mistria. Sure enough, even March blushes when he catches a whiff, so it’s totally worth the 500 tesserae.

March’s Heart Events

In its current early access state, Fields of Mistria brings two heart events per character to the table. We’ll see more added with each update leading up to its 1.0 release, per NPC Studio’s roadmap. For now, though, here’s what you can expect from March at each available relationship milestone.

Event #1

At two hearts, you’ll receive a letter from March in the mail, in which he tells you to meet him at the Blacksmith’s. He doesn’t waste time mincing words and brings up your budding reputation around Mistria. Although it certainly seems like your conversation is headed in a positive direction, he instead takes the opportunity to poke holes in your plans, assuming you’ll jump ship once rebuilding the town gets too difficult.

You’re given a few dialogue options throughout the exchange, so you’re free to respond as you please. In any case, he brings the tense conversation to an end with a rather unexpected gift: a Copper Hoe.

Event #2

March’s second heart event is unlocked at four hearts. Rather than receiving a letter from the blacksmith himself, you’ll instead find a letter from Olric in your mailbox, asking you to help the two out with their hefty workload at the forge. While March isn’t entirely welcoming upon your arrival, he warms up quickly, coaching you through the forging process and smelting ore at your side.

In seemingly no time at all, you’re able to complete a massive order of ingots. Again, you have a few opportunities to choose your own dialogue, but the lesson remains: Many hands make light work. After agreeing to a job well done, March runs off at the last second.

Friday Nights at the Inn

The Sleeping Dragon Inn is the heart of Mistria, and it comes alive on Friday nights. Each season brings new gatherings of your favorite townies, with their own stories and problems to solve over the course of roughly 28 days. While you can’t truly participate in these weekly happenings at the Inn, you can lend a listening ear, purchase and gift drinks, and even offer your own input in conversations every once in a while. More than anything, spending Friday nights at the Inn is the best way to mingle with the folks of Mistria.

March kicks off the spring at the bar alongside Valen, Juniper, Elsie, and company, revealing he’s a bit of a lightweight (and he might actually like you). From lively discussions of wine, he then takes a seat in the drawing club with Hayden and Valen in the summer, spotlighting a new model to sketch each week. After that, he moves to the D&D table in the fall and becomes Lord Anvilstrike under Queen Maple’s rule. Come winter, he’s back at the bar for a taste-testing club of sorts with Reina, Hayden, and Eiland.
