Two minutes in a football game can be a very long time. In Madden NFL 25, scoring on a two-minute drill is more of a challenge than the Chiefs and Bills made it look a few years ago, but it’s very exhilarating when you can pull it off for a win. Let’s break down how you can punch the ball in to score when you need it most.
Huddle or No Huddle?
Madden 25 includes several clock settings so you can make the game as long or as breezy as you like. I typically like playing with six-minute quarters and no accelerated clock as this setup produces realistic stats and scores. With these settings, I would recommend against using a no huddle offense during your two-minute drill.
There’s an extended clock runoff when using the no-huddle, and it can burn more time off the clock than if you just used the standard play selection screen. You could lose anywhere from 10 to 20 seconds, which is an eternity when we’re talking about a two-minute drill.
Stopping the Clock
If you’re without timeouts, always keep a close eye on the game clock. Try to get out of bounds as much as possible to stop the clock and know how to spike the ball in case your ball carrier gets tackled in bounds. I always try to keep a timeout in reserve as much as possible to use late in the game, either to set up a field goal or in case I get tackled in bounds a few yards short of the goal line.
Work the Sidelines
Out routes are your friend during a two-minute drill. Work the sidelines so your receivers can quickly catch and sprint out of bounds or make a toe-tap catch. Short out routes against soft zones can quickly get you some yards, and if the defense is playing man coverage you might have the chance to race the ball up the boundary for some YAC.
Utilize the Middle
The defense is going to know you’ll be shuttling pass catchers to the sidelines, so there’s a chance the defense may leave the middle of the field exposed. Use this to your advantage! Depending on the time remaining and your timeout situation, you might be able to pick up bigger chunks of yards throwing over the middle than you would throwing short and to the sidelines. Just don’t be like Dak Prescott and the Cowboys and make sure you have enough time to get a spike off.
Don’t Take Sacks
Easier said than done, I know, but sacks are the ultimate drive-killer when running a two-minute offense. Not only would you lose yards, but the clock will continue to run. Get the ball out quickly at the start of your drive and make sure you have sufficient protection when taking a deep shot. You can hot route your running back or tight end to instead become a pass blocker to ensure there’s enough protection and time for routes to develop downfield.
Favorite Your Best Plays
Going through the formation and play type tabs can take up precious time when picking a play. There’s no shame in choosing from the “coach suggestions” tab, but you may not like any of the plays offered for the situation. To make sure you can quickly choose a great play, favorite plays you like throughout games. Double-tapping the corresponding button will add a play to the “favorites” tab, making it easily accessible and saving you precious time as the game clock heads toward triple zeros.
