No matter what passing play you pick in Madden 22, there’s always the likelihood that the defense has chosen the perfect play to counter it. Whether that’s a well-timed blitz or simply good coverage, you may have to throw the ball away to avoid the sack and live another day. But how do you throw the ball away in Madden 22?
Just like sliding with your QB or going down with another position player, you can throw the ball away very easily in Madden 22. The input is the same for PS4/PS5 and Xbox One/Series X|S. All you have to do to throw the ball away is press in the right thumbstick.
However, make sure you’re outside of the tackle box/pocket before throwing the ball away. Unless there is an eligible receiver in the area, the throw will result in an intentional grounding penalty. You will not be penalized for throwing the ball away outside of the tackle box.
Most of the time, you only really have to worry about intentional grounding on plays where receivers go up field for deep verts, deep out routes, etc. Single route plays can also be problematic. If the play you’re running has a short out route (5-10 yards), you can throw the ball away to that side of the field while still in the pocket and avoid the penalty.
Additionally, you can throw the ball away while holding RT to run if you need to scramble away from a defender. Your quarterback will throw the ball toward the closest sideline.
And that’s all you need to know about how to throw the ball away in Madden 22. Sometimes you’ll just have to take the sack, but a well-timed throw to the sidelines can keep a drive from stalling or your quarterback from getting injured. Just remember to be aware of where you are on the field and where your eligible receivers are!
