I Have Wii Fit, I’m Totally In Shape

Here are some simple tips that won't get in the way of your server firsts.

Gamers get a pretty bad rep when it comes to health and fitness, often being portrayed as overweight with some serious acne in popular media. Even though the average gamer knows that is a fairly dramatic portrayal, long gaming sessions can take a toll on just about anyone’s health if they aren’t careful. Here are a few tips to help keep you in shape!

Can you chew away from the mic, please?

Just about anyone can relate to how horrible it is to hear someone chewing over the mic on any VoiP client. Well, not only is it a little obnoxious, but it’s also unhealthy. Eating your meals at your computer can result in overeating. Due to your mind being preoccupied, you are more likely to continue eating even after you’re full because you eat so quickly that your body doesn’t have time to let you know it’s full. Take the time to step away from the computer and eat your meals at the dinner table if at all possible.

Gamers also have a tendency to go for quick, easy snacks and that choice often ends with something like potato chips or candy. Try reaching for something just as easy but less bad like baby carrots, bananas, or even unbuttered popcorn. These snacks are quick, easy, and easier on those thighs.

From the computer chair to the bed.

We all know how important it is to get max level before anyone else on the server, but being sedentary for too long before going to bed can result in weight gain and trouble sleeping. Keep an eye on the time or even set an alarm to stop what you’re doing so that you can go for a jog (or even a brisk walk) for fifteen minutes. Anything works as long as it gets your heart pumping for 15 minutes. Want to stay in the gaming family? Play some really challenging songs on Dance Dance Revolution, Pump It Up, or StepMania (using the dance pad.)

Another neat trick is to replace that cushy computer chair with a fitness ball – they’re actually cheaper than most computer chairs and do a great job of working your core and lower body. Use these with caution though as you’ll be in a world of hurt if you try to use it all day.

Can’t sleep, must beat last boss.

Ah, the sweet rush of caffeinated beverages to give you that extra boost you need to keep the gaming going. While staying awake despite your body telling you to sleep is a bad idea to begin with, using caffeine to do it is even worse. Instead of reaching for an energy drink or soda, drink a glass of ice water. Your body is forced to wake up in order to warm the water to body temperature which in turn can give you that extra boost you’re looking for.

With the Steam Summer Sale upon us, there is going to be a lot of time spent in front of the computer, so there’s no better time than now to beta test these tips!

My gaming experience began with being introduced to strategy games such as Command & Concur and Age of Empires by my older brother with a sprinkle of fighter games like, Mortal Kombat. After that I ventured into the world of Japanese RPGs and fell in love. Today, I enjoy quite a few genres but stick to MMOs and MOBAs. I may add more to this later.
