How to Beat Romeo King of Puppets the in Lies of P

To beat Romeo King of Puppets in Lies of P, you’ll need to take note of its abilities during both phases of the battle. You’ll face off against a gargantuan mech with extreme reach due to its elongated arms (think Marvel’s Omega Red). Its attacks might be slow, but some are unblockable, too. This means only a Perfect Guard will be able to negate the damage.

Then, you’ll have to take on a speedy foe during the second phase. Moreover, this boss will use fire-boosted attacks, which will chip away at your health. That’s why I suggest wearing gear pieces that improve your resistance against fire damage and the Overheat status effect.

Phase 1: King of Puppets Construct

The Lies of P King of Puppets boss has the following abilities:

  • Twisting Slam – Your opponent will whirl around and hit you with its arms.
  • Vortex Blast – Crouches then pulls you in, followed by an AoE blast.
  • Tornado Spike – Creates a gust of wind around it, followed by a spike that bursts from underground. This will still hit you even if you hold down the block button.
  • Launching Leg Smash – Both arms punch through the ground before launching high up into the air.
  • Power Sweep – Does a wind-up before both arms sweep outward. This is unblockable.
  • Power Slam – Waddles toward you then smashes the ground, followed by both arms sweeping outward. This is unblockable.
  • Armed Rampage – Does multiple hits with both arms in quick succession.
  • Bombard – Shoots out several spark mines that explode after a couple of seconds.

In my experience, I found some of this boss’ attacks easy to determine because they’re telegraphed. For instance, Twisting Slam tends to be done frequently, so I just stayed close and I dodged to the right. I was then able to hit its leg and stomach. In fact, the boss’ movement also leaves it open to additional weapon swings, at least until it moves away to try another ability.

The most annoying attack, however, was Tornado Spike. Initially, I opted to keep my blocking, but since the spike emerges from underground, it still hit my character. Timing a Perfect Guard was also moot due to how the spike travels toward you. As such, I found it more manageable to just stay close to the boss and roll away if I’m lucky. Also, it goes without saying that you need to move further away when it does Vortex Blast and Bombard.

Phase 2: Romeo King of Puppets

After depleting the boss’ HP, a cutscene will play and you’ll start the Lies of P Romeo King of Puppets encounter. This maniacal foe emerges from the construct, and his moves are significantly faster:

  • Dash Strike – Very high speed; dodges and dashes before swooping in for a melee attack.
  • Rip and Rise – Stabs downward to hit your character, then causes an upward burst.
  • Scythe Dance – Twirls often to hit in melee. It’s better to dodge sideways then attack once when you see an opening.
  • Power Stomp – Does a wind-up before stomping with his foot. This is unblockable.
  • Aerial Assault – Jumps high up into the air, then crashes down with a foot stomp. This is unblockable.
  • Flame Dash – Dashes around and causes flames to appear on the ground; taking damage causes Overheat build-up.
  • Flame Grindstone – Imbues scythe with flames, which will cause Overheat. This is an eight-hit combo.

Romeo is a lot faster, so his attack patterns can throw you off. This is especially true since you spent all that time learning the construct’s moves. I advise you to play more defensively by dodging at the right moment and holding down the block button (or Aegis Legion Arm guarding) when necessary.

I found it virtually impossible to perfectly dodge or block every attack, so I waited for an opportunity to strike, usually at the end of combo chains. I relied mostly on one or two weapon swings before playing defense once more. Likewise, gear pieces that decrease damage from the fire element and Overheat also help here, since you’re likely to be afflicted with the debuff if you get hit.
