Lords of the Fallen: How to Fix Stuttering

If you're struggling with stuttering in Lords of the Fallen, here are some potential fixes to smooth out your experience.

Achieving a stable frame rate in Lords of the Fallen has proven tricky. Though many agree it’s a solid Soulslike that looks great visually, you can’t appreciate it when the performance issues are downright frustrating. Stuttering, in particular, interrupts the game randomly or constantly for some. However, if you’re struggling with low FPS, there are a few potential fixes you can try. In this guide, we’ll cover how you might fix stuttering in Lords of the Fallen for a smoother experience.

How to Fix Stuttering in Lords of the Fallen

Whether you’re playing on console or PC, stuttering may occur in Lords of the Fallen. There are several reasons this might be happening. It could be anything from outdated drivers to incompatible PC specs or even poor optimization when it comes to consoles. Laggy, choppy gameplay is the worst problem to have, so be sure to try these possible solutions.

Update Your Drivers

Updating your drivers is vital to play any new release smoothly, especially for Lords of the Fallen. I’m constantly forgetting to get the latest drivers, so this is always the first thing I check when my games aren’t performing as well as they should. To install new drivers, go to the NVIDIA graphics drivers official website or the AMD drivers official websiteOnce you install them, be sure to restart your PC before trying the game again.

Check Lords of the Fallen PC Requirements

A likely culprit for unstable frame rates is outdated hardware. Here are the recommended PC system requirements for Lords of the Fallen:

  • OS: Windows 10 64bit
  • Processor: intel i7 8700 | AMD Ryzen 5 3600
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Graphics: 8GBs VRAM | NVIDIA RTX-2080 | AMD Radeon RX 6700
  • DirectX: Version 12
  • Network: Broadband Internet connection
  • Storage: 45 GB available space
  • Additional Notes: 1080p High Quality Settings | SSD Required

Change Your Graphics Settings

Another option is to lower your graphics settings in-game. If you’re playing with Shadows, Texture Quality, Global Illumination Quality, Reflection Quality, and more on High, consider dropping two or more of those categories down to Low or Medium. Global Illumination has specifically been called out for causing FPS drops, so that might be the first one to experiment with.

Settings such as Motion Blur, Film Grain, and Chromatic Aberration, you’ll want to toggle off. As a best practice, I switch off Motion Blur for most games, seeing an instant uptick in performance when I do.

Close Background Applications

If you’re like me, you probably have multiple tabs open on your browser, a podcast on in the background, and possibly a Twitch stream on, too — all while playing a game. Some rigs aren’t made for that much multitasking, so be sure to close your background applications. That way, your PC can allot its power solely to running Lords of the Fallen

Verify the Integrity of Your Game Files

You might also want to verify your game files if you’re struggling with stuttering or crashes. This checks for any corrupted files and ensures they’re all installed correctly. Here’s how to check them:

  • Head to the Library Tab on Steam.
  • Right-click LotF.
  • Select Properties at the bottom of the drop-down menu.
  • Go to Installed Files.
  • Select “Verify integrity of game files.”

This process might take several minutes, so give it time.

Uninstall and Reinstall the Game

Uninstalling and reinstalling Lords of the Fallen should be the last option you try. If all else fails, this might fix your stuttering issues on PC. However, note that if this doesn’t work either, it’s likely an issue on the developer’s side. Performance issues have been widespread across the LotF playerbase, making it highly likely that it’s not necessarily a problem with your rig.

How to Fix Stuttering on PS5 in Lords of the Fallen

There aren’t as many steps when it comes to fixing stuttering on the PS5. Oftentimes, issues on consoles are less about the console itself and more about the version of the game that the devs released. What you can do is make sure your game is updated, turn off online play, and tweak the game’s Performance Mode. For a detailed look at how to do those things, check out our guide on how to get better PS5 performance

Well, that covers the potential ways you can fix stuttering in Lords of the Fallen. It’s always frustrating to experience FPS drops while playing a game, especially a Soulslike that requires precision and timing. Unfortunately, the game’s rocky launch has left players struggling with crashes, login issues, and more.  For more on how to fix crashing and the best weapons, take a look at our LotF guides hub.
