One of the most beloved aspects of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask was the sheer number of sidequests and collectibles available. With an entire page of masks available, it was occasionally more fun taking time out to warp through all four corners of Termina to collect them all.
In Majora’s Mask 3D, many things have been updated and some things have gotten moved around a little (e.g. the Bomber Kids). Some of them, like the new locations of the Stone’s Mask and the Giant’s Mask make a lot more sense within the context of the game.. Not that this makes them much easier to find.
Where Is the Stone Mask?
Prerequisites:
- Finish Snowhead Temple and learn how to use Powder Kegs
- Possess the Eye of Truth
- Learn Epona’s Song
In the original game, you can find this mask once you gain access to the Road to Ikana. Once you call Epona and use her to jump over the two fences barring you from the main road area (just before the cliff that leads to Ikana), use the Eye of Truth to find Shiro, an inconspicuous (and invisible) Clock Town Soldier lying in a circle of stones to whom you give the potion and receive the Stone Mask in return.
On the 3DS, Shiro won’t be anywhere near Ikana but right in the middle of an area that is made exponentially easier with the Stone’s Mask: the Pirate Fortress in Great Bay.
REMINDER: Bring either a Red Potion or a Blue Potion. Completing the first part of the Pirate’s Fortress is much easier if you buy Tingle’s map of Great Bay.
- Reach the secret underground entrance as Zora Link near the eastern wall of Great Bay and smash through the wooden boards blocking the way (2nd from the left).
- Dive down into the water once all the patrol boats have passed you by and swim off to the far left, wait for the patrol boats to pass you once again, then climb up. At the top of this piece of land you will find a large switch and across a steep drop, you will see a large open doorway. Goron Pound this switch to open an underwater entrance to the Fortress.
- This section of the Fortress is quite linear. Make your way through the puzzles until you exit a door that leads back out into this large area with the patrol boats (be careful not to jump off). Follow the grated pathway to the open doorway you saw in Step 2.
- Directly in the center of this wide open space is a large tower with a ladder.
- Using your Hero Bow, shoot the guards patrolling in front of you (there should be about three that are likely to see you). This will stun them, not kill them so you have a limited amount of time to run forward to this ladder.
- Tatl will chime and, if you choose to speak to her, she’ll tell you she thought she heard something. Switch on the Eye of Truth and look around. Shiro should be sitting near the base of the tower.
- Speak to him and give him the Red or Blue Potion. He will give you the Stone Mask in return.
This mask keeps regular enemies and pirate guards from being able to see you (unless you try to talk to them). In a place like the Pirate’s Fortress, it can come in very handy!
Where Is the Giant’s Mask?
NOTE: I recommend bringing a Green Potion or drinking some Chateau Romani before starting the Stone Tower boss fight.
In the original N64 version, part-way through completing the Stone Tower temple in Ikana, you would find this mask in a chest shortly before you enter the boss area (just after you beat the large eye monster on the bridge). You put this mask on immediately once you enter the boss area and fight both Twinmolds at once.
On the 3DS, the boss fight is broken in half – you fight the blue Twinmold first as normal Link, and only once he is defeated will a chest appear in the center containing the Giant’s Mask. You will need to use this in the fight against the red Twinmold.
(see How to Beat the New Temple Bosses for more on the Twinmold fight)
Note: This mask is not as functional or useful in any other situations outside of this particular boss fight (it can only be equipped in boss areas) but it must be obtained in order to finish the boss fight and complete this section of the story quest.
