Minecraft: How to Tame and Breed Camels

Have a safe journey using our guide on how to tame and breed camels in Minecraft.

The Camel is one of the best new additions in the Minecraft 1.20 Trails & Tales update. With it, you can travel safely without being attacked by hostile mobs. The camel is tall enough to protect you from ground mobs and large enough to accommodate two players on its back. Our guide will show you how to tame Camels in Minecraft, as well as how to breed them.

A single camel naturally spawns in every desert village. As you might expect, if you don’t have a desert in your Seed, you won’t be able to find a Camel. Make sure you’re using a Minecraft Seed that has a desert to find this mob.

Since Camels are a passive mob, they don’t need to be tamed through usual means. Instead, all you need to do is approach it and put a saddle on it.

While I’ve found that Camels are a great way to get around in Minecraft, there are some caveats that you should be aware of.

  • It’s impossible to enter a Nether Portal or an End Portal while riding a Camel.
  • You can enter the shallow water on Camels up to 3 blocks deep. If you try to push further while in the water, you’ll automatically dismount.

Lastly, I found out that camels can dash while pressing the “Jump” button. If you hold the button, the dash gauge will charge, and you can make a camel dash up to 12 blocks forward. It’s really useful for jumping on fences and walls.

Where to Find Saddles for Camels in Minecraft 1.20

You can find saddles in treasure chests almost anywhere, including villages, desert and jungle temples, dungeons, strongholds, etc. Once you put a saddle on a Camel, you can mount it and control it using general directional buttons.

If you want to breed Camels, you’ll need to bring two adult Camels together and feed them Cactus. I came up with a simple strategy for quick Camel breeding that looks like this:

  1. Find a Camel in a desert village and put a saddle on it.
  2. Mount the Camel or use Cactus to make it follow you.
  3. Bring the Camel to another desert village with the second Camel.
  4. Once the two Camels stand together, feed them Cactus.

You can repeat this procedure every five minutes, as that’s how long the cooldown lasts before the two Camels can breed again. If you want a baby Camel to grow faster, feed it more Cactus. You can also use Cactus to heal both adult and baby Camels.
