Not many games implement text-to-speech as an accessibility feature, but Minecraft sure as heck has. The Minecraft narrator is useful for the visually impaired, but it can be irksome if you don’t need the game reading out every line of text for you. If that sounds like you, here’s how to turn off the narrator in Minecraft.
How to Turn Text to Speech Off in Minecraft
The text-to-speech narrator is now in every version of the game, from Java and Bedrock to console and Pocket. We’ll go over how to turn it off on every platform just to have all our bases covered.
How to Turn Off Narration in Minecraft: Java and Bedrock
The easiest way to turn off the narrtor on both platforms is to press the Ctrl + B keys on your keyboard.
- In Minecraft: Java Edition, pressing Ctrl + B will cycle you between different narrator settings: Off, All, Chat, and System.
- In Minecraft: Bedrock Edition, pressing Ctrl + B simply toggles the narrator on and off. If you are trying instead to tweak which text it reads out, you’ll need to head to the Accessibility portion of your Settings menu to choose what it will read.
How to Turn Off Narration in Minecraft on Console
Similar to how you tweak these settings in Bedrock Edition but without a shortcut similar to Ctrl + B on PC, you’ll need to head into your settings if you’re playing Minecraft on Xbox platforms, PlayStation platforms, or the Nintendo Switch.
To turn off the narrator on console, you’ll need to go to the Settings menu and then select Accessibility. Toggle the UI Screen Reader option to turn it off.
How to Turn Off Narration in Minecraft: Pocket Edition
The outlier, you’ll be heading to a different settings menu in Pocket Edition than the others.
Open your Settings menu, then go to Chat Settings. You’ll see a Narrator option you can toggle on and off.
Now you know how to turn off the narrator in Minecraft, from Java to Pocket and beyond. This guide was pretty simple, but we have plenty more seed lists and comprehensive Minecraft guides to dive into.
