PUBG: The “Matching Failed Try Again” Error Is Often a Server Issue

As with any other online-centric game that serves millions of players, when connectivity issues arise in PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS the internet starts to riot. Players will often find a million different reasons why they can’t connect to their favorite online games game — but in the case of PUBG and its recent bout of “Matching Failed” errors, most connectivity issues are server based.

The past week was rough for players of the immensely popular online battle royal game. The days leading up to, and during, the Gamescom PUBG Invitational, gamers were running into an error while connecting to matches.

The “Matching Failed. Try Again” error filled PUBG forums and Steam pages, without any real resolutions. While players all over the world were trying to figure out what was wrong with their connections, many may not have realized that the issue wasn’t on their side at all. 

Considering the game is still in Early Access and the fact that people are buying it in droves, it’s no surprise that there are occasional hiccups on the server side. Luckily, the developers are well aware of the issues and do their best to fix it in a timely manner.

Occasionally, there are issues on the player side that can be easily fixed and get players back into the game as soon as possible. Here are a couple common troubleshoots for connections issues:

• Restart your computer. It’s the cure-all resolution for minor problems that come up with updates.
• Restart your modem. (Ever seen that South Park episode? It works.)
• Make sure all game files are present. In the Steam menu, right click on the game and then click on the Properties tab followed by the Local Files tab. Then, click “Verify Integrity of Files”, where Steam will replace any missing or out of place files.
• Make sure your Windows Update is up to date.
• Update all of your graphics drivers.
• Disable any firewalls/antivirus during play.
• Run the game/Steam as an admin. Right click and click “Run as Administrator”.

If none of these solutions worked for you, chances are it’s an issue on the server side. Your best bet is to wait it out, and hope that the developers fix it up in a timely manner. Generally, major updates will cause some connection issues for a number of players — but as the game gets closer to an official release, these issues should start to dwindle.
