The Never Heard It Coming trophy and achievement in Resident Evil 4 remake poses a daunting task that some players have missed entirely. Unlocking it requires you to kill a Garrador only using knives. That’s a tall order for one of the most ferocious enemies you’ll encounter, but there’s a trick to make it easier.
How to Get the Never Heard It Coming Trophy and Achievement in RE4 Remake
There is more than one encounter against the Garrador in RE4 remake, but the first encounter is the best place to unlock the Never Heard It Coming trophy and achievement. That means you’ll be aiming to unlock it in the Dungeons area during Chapter 7.
You’ll begin to see Boot Knives drop from enemies in the Castle chapters, and the Plaga Mandíbula enemy introduced at the beginning of Chapter 7 will drop one, as well. Hold onto any you find.
Once you’ve gone through the Castle Gate and cleared the enemies in the Audience Chamber, visit the nearby Merchant and repair any damage to your Combat Knife. You can increase the durability if you haven’t before, as well as increase the damage, although any disposable knives should do the trick for this challenge on Standard difficulty.
This fight will begin very soon after you’ve walked into the Dungeons and picked up the Dungeon Key from the corpse. Once you take the key, turn around, and a cutscene introducing the Garrador will begin.
The gimmick of this ferocious monster is that it can’t see and attacks based on hearing. Leon will mention this and automatically crouch to imply that it’s best to be quiet.
How to Beat the Garrador Using Only Knives for Never Heard It Coming
This is where you’ll start the challenge for Never Heard It Coming. Move out of the room to the left and you’ll see a bundle of chains hanging from the ceiling. No matter what you do here, the Garrador will be triggered and start to break from its restraints as you approach the chains. Don’t crouch — run.
The next room you enter will be where the fight takes place. Go back to crouching and move to the side of the door. The Garrador will come charging in before stopping to listen for you.
Your basic strategy is to repeatedly sneak up behind him and press the button prompt to stab him in the back where a Plaga can be seen.
Each successful knife stab will cause the Garrador to flail his claws around wildly for a while, and you’ll need to back away as soon as you’ve stabbed him. He can run and attack afterward, so make sure to keep some distance in case he runs at you.
It should only take 5-6 stabs on Standard difficulty to kill the Garrador with only knives and get the Never Saw It Coming trophy and achievement.
Important Garrador Fight Tips
As simple as killing the Garrador with only knives sounds, it’s important to break down some key aspects of this fight and of the Garrador’s behavior. The main tip is that being patient and prepared will make the Never Heard It Coming trophy and achievement an easy unlock.
Understanding what will get his attention is vital. The following is what will trigger him:
- Running
- Walking into chains
- Breaking either of the two vases
- Gunfire
Only walking into the chains will make him run toward you. If you move into it while crouched, there will be no reaction at all. Consider staying crouched at first until you get used to the room and memorize where the chains are.
Chains can be used to your advantage. Walk into a chain or do a short run to make the Garrador come to you. He’ll be swinging wildly, but it’s a good way to get this enemy in a more advantageous spot.
Trying to stab him while his back is facing a corner or a wooden panel might not give you enough room to dodge his swipes.
Garrador’s behavior will become more erratic as he takes more damage. Instead of just walking around and giving you plenty of opportunity to stab him, he’ll randomly begin swinging his arms around in hopes of slicing you.
The wooden panels can very easily be broken, so don’t count on them for protection. Continue to maintain your distance and approach him once he starts moving or if there are a few seconds where he’s not attacking. It can be difficult to judge when it’s safe to approach, but these are the best times.
While you can fight the Garrador and stay crouched the entire time, the slower movement speed will make it more likely for him to catch you with a random attack. If you find yourself beginning to get hit before you can stab him, you’ll probably have a better chance if you start walking.
