Rise of the Ronin Factions, Explained

Rise of the Ronin takes place during a period of turmoil and change. With the arrival of the Westerners in Japan after centuries of no foreigners being allowed to set foot in Japan, two political factions were created, the Anti-Shogunate Faction and the Pro-Shogunate Faction. Here’s Rise of the Ronin Factions, explained. 

Factions Guide in Rise of the Ronin

Anti-Shogunate Faction

The Anti-Shogunate Faction seeks to take out the corrupt Shogunate to give power back to the Emperor. They forego some traditions and use Western weapons such as guns to be able to accomplish their missions. A notable member of this faction is Ryoma Sakamoto, one of the first allies you’ll encounter in the game. 

If you side with the Anti-Shogunate Faction, you’ll be tasked to take out Shogunate loyalists and foreigners alike to restore imperial power to Japan. They are the side that most believe in restoring Japan to its traditional ways. 

Pro-Shogunate Faction

The Pro-Shogunate Faction believes that the current order should stay, claiming that only the Shogunate can protect Japan. One of the first members of this faction you’ll encounter is Taka Murayama, a Geisha from the Pleasure District of Yokohama. 

If you side with the Pro-Shogunate Faction, you’ll have to eliminate members of the Anti-Shogunate Faction and maintain the Shogunate rule. This faction embraces a more modern idea and is more accepting of Westerners and their ideals. 

Which Faction to Choose in Rise of the Ronin 

Deciding which faction to join will affect the story and your bond with certain characters. However, in the early parts of the game, you’ll complete missions for both sides to understand them better. 

If there is a certain character you wish to bond with or even romance, you should choose the faction that they align with. For instance, if you wish to romance Taka Murayama, you’ll have an easier time bonding with her if you choose to support the Pro-Shogunate Faction.
