The first main area of SpongeBob Squarepants Battle for Bikini Bottom  Rehydrated, Jellyfish Fields, is where you learn many of the game’s main mechanics. It’s also home to the game’s first boss, King Jellyfish, which can be found at the end of the stage.

Because of Rehydrateds finicky collision detection, this boss is a lot trickier than it should be. In this walkthrough guide, we’ll tell you how to beat King Jellyfish and what to look out for during the encounter.

SpongeBob Squarepants Battle for Bikini Bottom: How to Beat King Jellyfish

Timing is Important

King Jellyfish takes a shower with a red shower curtain.

As soon as you reach the top of the area, you’ll find King Jellyfish taking a shower. How rude of us to intrude!

You’ll be instructed to “slap him,” which you can do with a simple attack: “Square” on PS4, “X” on Xbox One, and “Y” on Nintendo Switch.

You can’t just run up to the boss and strike him, though. Instead, you must wait for him to slam down on the ground with his massive AoE attack, which sends a jellyfish ray towards you.

As soon as he slams down, be ready to jump over the blast. You’ll have a few split seconds to run over to him to pull off one attack. If you’re too slow, he’ll charge himself up again, which deals damage to you if you’re too close.

It’s recommended to stay near King Jellyfish so you’ll have enough time to run over and attack. Make sure you’re right next to him when you’re ready to strike, because your melee attack doesn’t have much range to it.

Survive Three Phases

Drop down at the edge of the arena for underwear if you lose health.

The boss fight includes three phases, all of which are pretty much the same. King Jellyfish gets slightly more aggressive with each phase, and in the last two phases, he will throw smaller jellyfish at you that you must take out.

It’s important that you stay close enough to the boss to be able to quickly pull off an attack, but not so close that you’ll take damage. The only time he’s vulnerable is for a brief period after the AoE attack, so make sure you aren’t touching him in between strikes. If you do, he’ll shock you and you’ll take damage.

If you do get hit, there are multiple pairs of underwear throughout the area you can use to replenish your health. Make sure you drop down below to find a few of them.

When in doubt, try to sit back and watch King Jellyfish’s attack pattern to get a sense for the timing. When you feel comfortable, get up close and go for the attack.

With that information, you should be well-prepared to take down King Jellyfish in SpongeBob Squarepants Battle for Bikini Bottom — Rehydrated. For more on Rehydrated, make sure you check out our review here.
