It’s always important to keep your party in tip-top condition when facing the challenges ahead. Our guide discusses how to earn XP and level up in Super Mario RPG.
How to Earn XP and Level Up Stat Bonuses in Super Mario RPG
The Super Mario RPG level-up method is fairly straightforward: just defeat enemies to earn XP. The game itself does not have traditional questlines or activities that reward XP. Instead, everything just boils down to winning battles.
Also, for the sake of clarity, the Super Mario RPG level cap is 30. However, you’ll likely complete the campaign before hitting that mark, and that’s totally fine. I personally finished my initial playthrough when most of my characters were level 23.
How to Level Up Stats
Whenever a character levels up in Super Mario RPG, all their stats will increase. Likewise, you can choose from three options that grant additional boons:
- Health: Increases maximum hit points.
- Physical: Increases normal attack and defense.
- Magic: Increases special attack and defense.
At certain levels, it’s also possible to see that certain stats gain more points compared to others. For instance, at level 15, Mario might gain +5 HP if you pick health, but only +1 normal attack/defense if you pick Physical. The choice is entirely up to you, but I also suggest visiting our character stat bonuses guide. I outlined the ideal stat bonuses to choose based on a character’s abilities and intended role in combat.
Efficient Ways to Earn XP in Super Mario RPG
The most efficient way to farm XP and level up in Super Mario RPG is simply by defeating a lot of opponents in battles. I would advise you to check the Monster List (i.e. Bestiary) in the Journal menu. This shows you the hostiles that you’ve faced, as well as the XP they grant. I also prefer having Mallow in my active party. That’s because of his Thunderbolt skill, which is the most cost-effective spell that hits all targets. It’s great for quickly killing off weaker foes.
Likewise, be on the lookout for post-battle prompts that allow you to double the XP you earn. These minigames involve guessing which egg contains Yoshi. However, if you pick the wrong one, you’ll lose all the XP you’ve earned in that battle.
Choosing Breezy Mode
Last but not least, there’s an option to choose “Breezy” mode via the System > Settings menu. The “Breezy” difficulty makes battles easier, thus leading to faster XP farming. It’s also one of several differences between the remake and the original.
That’s it: that’s everything you need to know about how to earn XP and level up in Super Mario RPG. Now that you know this core gameplay mechanic, you might be wondering how characters get recruited as party members. For more tips and strategies, you can check out our SMRPG guides hub.
