What Spells to Pick for Druid in Baldur’s Gate 3

While you can get some neat spell options like Haste through the Circle of the Land subclass, this list will focus solely on base-class Druid spells. There are plenty of options here, but I wanted to outline some of the best ones in terms of damage, support, battlefield control, and utility. Here’s a quick overview before we dive into the list:

You can click on any one to skip to the ones that interest you.

Guidance

This is, without a doubt, one of the best Druid and Cleric spells in the game, as it has a wide use in any dialogue, lockpick, or disarm situation. It adds +1d4 to any skill check you’re trying to pass, and the best part is that it’s automatically there in the skill check to be added as a bonus. You don’t have to cast it beforehand. I passed numerous Persuasion and Disarm checks thanks to Guidance just because I needed that extra +2 or +3.

Healing Word

While late-game Druid spells like Mass Cure Wounds and Heal far overpower Healing Word, the beauty of this spell lies in how early you get it. This is a Level 1 spell that you should always bring on your journey. It doesn’t heal that much, but this isn’t its primary use. Healing Word is the strongest when you realize that it’s just a Bonus Action. It heals from range, and you can instantly get a downed ally back into the fight.

Flaming Sphere

In the early to mid-game, Flaming Sphere excels as an effective Druid concentration spell you can use each turn for free or move it with a Bonus Action. It deals decent AOE fire damage and allows you to control the battlefield while casting other non-concentration high-impact damage spells like Blight or Plant Growth. If you’re scared of hurting your allies, you can even turn the AOE flames off and just use the spell for its Bonus Action ram attack.

Spike Growth/Entangle

If you want to affect a much grander area, then Spike Growth and Entangle are better concentration options. Both reduce enemy movement over a wide area of effect, while Entangle restrains them and Spike Growth deals damage. I highly recommend using these with a ranged-oriented team like Rangers and Rogues to slow down incoming enemies and shoot them down from a distance.

Call Lightning

In terms of damage-per-round value, you can’t go wrong with Call Lightning. It not only deals decent AOE lightning damage, but it’s also repeatable each turn. This is a great spell if you just want to do sustained damage while not spending any spell slots each round. Furthermore, it’s a great spell to upcast due to its 1d10 damage die so with a Level 5 spell slot (5d10) you’re essentially dropping Fireballs each turn.

Conjure Minor Elemental/Conjure Woodland Being

Baldur’s Gate 3 has massively buffed Druid summoning spells since they no longer require concentration, and they last for the entire day. This means that Conjure Minor Elemental or Conjure Woodland Being is a must-have. I highly recommend the Azer as a strong frontline damage option for the former and Dryads due to their repertoire of CC/utility spells for the latter. Cast these at the beginning of the day, and you’ll have a companion until your next Long Rest.

Blight

When talking about the best Druid spells, Blight takes the top spot for single-target damage. At Level 7, this spell is essentially a mini-nuke on an enemy. It gets even better once you get the Staff of Cherished Necromancy later or can cast it for free with Woe. That aside, any Druid should have this in their arsenal for boss fights.

Wall of Fire

In terms of battlefield control, a great option is also Wall of Fire, just due to the sheer amount of damage it can deal if positioned correctly. I often deploy this ability with my druid to cut off enemy melee attackers from my ranged ones. Leave your tanky Fighter, Paladin, or Barbarian on the other side and watch the enemies charge your ranged characters just to take a fistful of d8s as fire damage. It starts out as 5d8 plus the d6 ground burn and increases as you start upcasting. Just be careful not to step into the fire yourself.

Conjure Elemental

The ultimate summoning spell for Druids is Conjure Elemental. It works the same way as the previous summoning spell we mentioned but just spawns a tougher ally. Myrmidons are great frontline tanks, and I especially suggest the Earth Myrmidon for melee damage and immunity to most harmful effects. This earth dude tanked Cazzador Ghouls for me since he can’t be paralyzed.

Fire Myrmidons also have some decent ranged AOE damage and Water one’s combo greatly if you have high-damage Lightning spells. Just as before, I cast this at the beginning of the day since they last until your Long Rest, but note that you can’t have more than one Myrmidon up at a time.

Sunbeam

While Druids don’t get access to the most powerful damage spells in the game, like Chain Lightning or Disintegrate for Sorcerers, they have Sunbeam, which deals lesser damage but is incredibly sustainable. Sunbeam deals 6d8 Radiant damage in an 18-meter line and can Blind all foes hit by the spell. The best part is that you can then cast this spell again for the same effect for 10 turns as long as you maintain concentration. It’s similar to Call Lightning in this regard, offering a high-damage AOE burst that blinds enemies each round for a single spell slot.

That concludes my guide on the top 10 best Druid spells in Baldur’s Gate 3. For more BG3 guides, check out the best Druid and Cleric gear in the game.
