Did you know that you can recruit custom mercenaries for your party? This is an excellent way to introduce a new role to your team that your companions might not otherwise fill. Here’s our guide on how to recruit and dismiss mercenaries in Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader.
Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader Mercenaries Explained
Custom mercenaries have been a feature in both Kingmaker and Wrath of the Righteous. What I like about how they’re implemented in Rogue Trader is that they’re available quite early. However, instead of costing gold, they’ll cost you 1 Profit Factor. This means that you’re choosing whether to spend this resource on mercs, character resets, or at traders like Thunderfang. With this in mind, I wouldn’t recruit too many of mercenaries early on. You’ll have much more Profit in the mid to late-game.
How to Recruit Mercenaries
Follow these exact steps to recruit mercenaries in Rogue Trader:
- Go to your Voidship’s bridge hub area.
- Walk beyond the Starmap and locate High Factotum Janris Danrok.
- Talk to him, and choose the “I wish to bolster my retinue with skilled fighters” option.
- Choose “Custom Character.”
- Create your mercenary.
You can choose your merc’s Homeworld, Origin, and Archetype just like you do for your main character. This is a great way to build a custom party later in the game when you have more Profit Factor. You can assign mercenaries to your team when you’re entering a new combat instance.
How to Dismiss Mercs in Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader
Unfortunately, I haven’t found a way to dismiss mercenaries yet, and I’m starting to think there’s no way to do it at all. It’s slightly frustrating that Owlcat doesn’t even tell you that creating a merc spends 1 Profit Factor point. It seems you can’t “sell” or get rid of them to get your Profit back. It’s true that you won’t have to worry about Profit that much later on, but I really do hope they add a “dismiss” option down the line.
