What’s In the Unicorn Overlord Collector’s Edition (& Is It Worth It)

Unicorn Overlord, a love letter to old-school JRPGs, is finally coming out on March 8. Fans of the game have a chance to purchase the hefty Collector’s Edition, which comes with exciting physical goodies. So what’s in the Unicorn Overlord Collector’s Edition, and is it worth it?

Unicorn Overlord Collector’s Edition Explained

Essentially, there are two ways to purchase Unicorn Overlord, the base game edition and the Collector’s Edition titled Monarch Edition. Furthermore, the Monarch edition has two variations: digital and physical. Each comes with its own set of physical or digital goodies. Let’s break down all of the editions:

• The Unicorn Overlord Digital Collector’s/Monarch’s Edition ($69.99) comes with:
  • Digital Base Game.
  • Digital Artbook.

  • Physical Base Game.
  • Stylized Outer Box.
  • Physical Hardcover Artbook (132 pages).
  • Two CDs: 16-bit Arranged Music Album.
  • Physical Copy of the Unicorn Overlord Card Game.
  • DLC Voucher.
  • ATLUS X Vanillaware Heraldry Pack.

As you can see, the physical version of the Collector’s Edition is quite hefty and contains various exciting rewards. So, is it worth it at its price?

Is Unicorn Overlord Collector’s Edition Worth It?

Considering VanillaWare’s reputation, they excel at creating gorgeous artbooks, so the Unicorn Overlord Collector’s Edition might be worth it just for that collectible. If you don’t mind a PDF version, then the digital Collector’s Edition will suit you fine.

If you want a physical copy of the artbook in addition to an entire Unicorn Overlord card game custom-made in the Unicorn Overlord universe, then the physical copy is for you. The card game is all about drafting units from the game to control territories in a board game-like setting with friends and family.

We’ve seen artbooks and music albums in collector’s editions before, but I have to say I’ve never seen a custom card game before. If Odin Sphere or Dragon’s Crown are taken into consideration, the artbook will be of top-notch quality and with the card game in the mix, I would say the physical copy of the collector’s edition looks quite worthwhile.

For those on the cautious side – if the game performs well, Vanillaware might also start selling the artbook and the card game separately. This means that you can get the base game and then get the two physical collector’s items later on by themselves. If the physical copies don’t interest you and you just want access to the digital artbook, then I would just go with the Digital version of the Collector’s Edition.
