In Season of Discovery, Mages are hunting for more Spell Notes to acquire their Class Runes. But they’ll still need to be deciphered once they land in your inventory. In this guide, I’ll cover how to get more Comprehension Charms in WoW Classic SoD.
What are Comprehension Charms in WoW Classic: Season of Discovery?
In SoD, each class has a unique way to get more Runes and, thereby, additional abilities attached to your gear. For Mages, you’ll collect Comprehension Charms to use on Scrolls or Spell Notes. This unlocks a stat-based Scroll, such as Scroll of Strength, or a new Rune Engraving. It’s best to prioritize getting your Runes first. All Mages start with three Comprehension Charms after completing the Level 2 quest, Spell Research.
Where to Find More Comprehension Charms in WoW Classic: Season of Discovery
After completing Spell Research, you’ll obtain Ice Lance, which is applied to your Gloves. And it’ll reward you with Comprehension Charms. In my case, I spent them all on generic Scrolls, running out before a Spell Note dropped. Thankfully, Comprehension Charms can be obtained in two ways: completing Mage Quests to turn in books to librarian NPCs or purchasing them for seven silver from Reagent Vendors.
Where to Find the Spell Research Mage Quest
To start Spell Research, visit your Class Trainer in your starting zone. I’m playing an Undead Mage, so I had to talk to Isabella in Deathknell. Here’s where to find each race’s Mage Trainer:
Race | Mage Trainer | Location |
Human | Khelden Bremen | Northshire |
Gnome | Marryk Nurribit | Anvilmar |
Troll | Mai’ah | Valley of Trails |
Undead | Isabella | Deathknell |
All Reagent Vendors for Comprehension Charms in WoW SoD
The quickest way to get more Comprehension Charms is to buy them from Reagent Vendors for seven Silver. Simply visit a vendor in a capital city: Stormwind, Darnassus, Ironforge, Orgrimmar, Thunder Bluff, and the Undercity.
Comprehension Charm Reagent Vendor Locations for Alliance:
Vendor | City | Map Coordinates |
Kyra Boucher | Stormwind | 56.2, 65.0 |
Brother Cassius | Stormwind | 43.4, 26.8 |
Cyroen | Darnassus | 34.6, 9.8 |
Barim Jurgenstaad | Ironforge | 19.6, 56.2 |
Comprehension Charms Reagent Vendor Locations for Horde:
Vendor | City | Map Coordinates |
Horthus | Orgrimmar | 45.6, 56.8 |
Thomas Mordan | Undercity | 69.6, 39.2 |
Hannah Akeley | Undercity | 82.8, 16.1 |
Chepi | Thunderbluff | On the lower level near the lift, walking around the pond. Map Coordinates vary due to movement. |
All Mage Quests to Complete for More Comprehension Charms
You’ll find strange tomes, Arcane Research, or autobiographies while leveling. My first one was the Apothecary’s Metaphysical Primer, which I found in Brill. Looting these books will give you a Mage quest to turn them into librarian NPCs in main cities, rewarding a Comprehension Charm when you do. Turning in 10 books, will also reward you with the Icy Veins rune.
For Alliance, go to Garion Wendell at the top of the Mage Tower in Stormwind or the librarian in the Hall of Explorers in Ironforge. For Horde, head to the Magic Quarter in the Undercity and find Owen Thadd. Here’s a breakdown of all the Mage quests for book turn-ins and where to find each item:
Quest | Book Location | Reward |
The Apothecary’s Metaphysical Primer | Brill Apothecary Building | 1 Comprehension Charm |
The Lessons of Ta’zo | Mural of Ta’zo in Orgrimmar | 1 Comprehension Charm |
Crimes Against Anatomy | Dawning Wood Catacombs in Duskwood | 1 Comprehension Charm |
Baxtan: On Destructive Magics | Ratchet Engineers Hut | 1 Comprehension Charm |

What are Comprehension Charms Used for in WoW SoD?
Comprehension Charms are soulbound single-use items that decipher Scrolls and translate Spell Notes. Scrolls will yield stat buffs that last for an hour. These will have cryptic names such as “LOWER PING WOMEVER” or “KWYJIBO,” but the Comprehension Charm will turn them into a Scroll of Protection, Strength, Agility, etc.
However, its main use is for unlocking Mage Runes by translating Spell Notes. This includes Phase 2 Spell Notes, such as “PELFRB STOLLOTS” for Spellfrost Bolt and “TROFF IRESTBOL” for Frostfire Bolt. You’ll use it on Phase 1 Spell Notes as well, including “TENGI RONEERA” for Regeneration.
