Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (TotK) — How to Dupe Bubbul Gems

Here's our guide on how to dupe Bubbul Gems in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Bubbul Gem and Bubbul Frog dupe method is an exploit that you can try in the game. With it, you’ll no longer need to worry about exploring each cave just to find the elusive creatures. Here’s our guide on how to dupe Bubbul Gems in TotK. Likewise, please take note that this glitch works for version 1.10 of the game.

The Ancient Zora Waterworks

To dupe Bubbul Gems in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you’ll need to unlock one specific location in the world: the Ancient Zora Waterworks. This is done by advancing further in the Lanayru Regional Phenomena main quest.

The goal is to reach the point where a whirlpool is created in the middle of the lake, allowing you to dive down to reach a new location. The coordinates are: 3615, 0357, 0027.

Inside the Ancient Zora Waterworks, do the aqueduct puzzle until you’re able to traverse most of the once-flooded area. At the back-right portion of the tower, you’ll find a ruined bridge. Also, in the upper section of that, there’s a tunnel that leads to a cavern.

How to Dupe Bubbulfrogs and Bubbul Gems

As with most caves in the game, this one also has a Bubbulfrog. The difference here is that this area is ripe for an exploit. Here’s what we need to do:

  • Stand a short distance away from the Bubbulfrog.
  • Shoot and kill it.
  • As it falls down to the ground, cast Ascend. Link will be able to phase through the cavern’s ceiling.
  • After around four seconds, press the B button to cancel the action.
  • You’ll end up back in the cavern, but there’s a surprise waiting for you. The creature you killed earlier already dropped a Bubbul Gem. However, a second creature has also spawned.

With the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Bubbul Gem and Bubbulfrog dupe method, you’ll be able to repeat these steps until you have 20 Bubbul Gems on the ground (i.e., 20 kills). That’s because having more than 20 dropped items will cause a few of the previous ones to disappear. Although you won’t earn an infinite number of items, this still saves a lot of time since you won’t need to explore 20 additional caves.

Causes of the Exploit and Other Locations

For those wondering why this Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Bubbul Gem dupe method can only be done in this specific cave, I believe it’s because it counts as (a) a separate zone when you go through the whirlpool, and (b) it’s part of a main quest, making it a special location.

But, what if you already killed the Bubbulfrog here? Sadly, I don’t think there are other viable locations for this glitch. I’ve tried the other whirlpool in Lake Hylia, and this trick didn’t work. Also, I’ve tested the quicksand pits in Gerudo, to no avail.

Still, if you haven’t killed the Bubbulfrog here and you want to keep using this trick, you’ll need to disable automatic updates to avoid patches that will end up fixing this. You can do this via the Nintendo Switch’s home screen -> Settings -> Automatic Update: Off.
