Kongregate stands as one of the top flash game portals online. Veering from what they’re known best for, the site is going to be hosting free to play software-based games to their already extensive browser-based flash library.

The additions are starting out small. The first wave of of titles released are as follows:

  • Super Monday Night Combat
  • Bomb Buddies
  • Smashmuck Champions

Kongregate is a subsidiary of GameStop and looks to be a core component to the company’s attempts to be less “physical” and more “digital”.

Jim Greer, chief executive officer of Kongregate, spoke with GamesIndustry International, saying they want to help developers “leverage our network of distribution and promotional channels to acquire and retain users, and ultimately monetize those interested in enhancing their gaming experience.”

Well, okay.

Will adding downloadable games to Kongregate really help GameStop that much? Considering there are over 15 million people using the site, it may be possible. The real question is whether or not the flash game-playing userbase is going to be willing to download games to play.

More titles will be added to the site’s downloadable games catalog in the coming weeks. We’ll just have to wait and see whether or not Kongregate will become an actual option for free to play games. It’s all going to come down to what they will be offering, and how they will approach monetizing them.
