After a gargantuan North American launch of 1 million units sold in 24 hours, Sony’s PlayStation 4 is now setting some records across the pond. The PS4 sold 250,000 units in 48 hours, totally shattering the previous 180,000 in one week record held by the PSP.
250,000 might not seem like much compared to our 1 million… but Forbes managed to put things into perspective.
For reference, 1 million PS4s were sold within 24 hours of launch in the US, which has a population of 313 million. You can compare that to the UK’s 250K in 48 hours with a population of 63 million, but further information is needed before we can say without a doubt that a higher ratio of the public has purchased a PS4 across the pond.
The PS4 launch has already surpassed the lifetime sales of the WiiU in that country, and crushed the Xbox One launch of 150,000 in the same time period (with a free copy of Fifa 14). Microsoft was quick to announce the Xbox One matched the PS4 in 1 million units sold in 24 hours; however that was a worldwide launch opposed to Sony’s North America only launch.
The PlayStation 4 launches across various parts of Asia all this month, and will be releasing in its homeland of Japan last on February 22nd, 2014.
There is no word yet on if the Duchess of Cambridge allowed Prince William to be one of those 250,000 who picked up the PS4 over the weekend.
I talk about the British PS4 launch as well as a follow up to 2 Kickstarter Games, I previously reported on in the latest Regurgitated News.
