Merchants are money makers. They are also a pretty hilarious class to play when you get it to max level. They can get you a ton of money, or blow it all away with their abilities. If you want to use the power of money to change battle and have a good sense of humor, the Merchant Job is for you.

Unlocking Merchant
You unlock Merchant in Chapter 1 by defeating the Profiteur. Continue the side quest after defeating the Thief. Go back to Ancheim, then to the far east house to fight the Profiteur.
Equipment Guide
Merchants have an S aptitude for Daggers, Staves, and Spears.
Armor
- Brave Suit is good. You get an extra BP so that you can get an extra action in.
- Use a shield in off-hand for added Defense.
Weapons
- I recommend a Dagger. The Pharmacy ability uses an item, so you are more likely to take advantage of the Dagger Special Move.
Ability List
The Specialty for Merchant is More Money.
- More Money – Earn 1.5 times more money than normal after a battle. Does not stack with items of similar effect, but multiple characters with the same ability does stack.
Level 1
- Pay to Play – Spend your level times 50 pg to raise the target’s Crit Rate by 300% for four turns. The limit for Crit Rate is 1000%.
Level 2
- Salesman – Make an enemy buy a recovery item from you at 2.4 times the selling price. Success rate depends on the item.
Level 3
- White Knight – Support ability that makes the ally with the most HP protect you from a single-target attack when your HP is below 20%.
Level 4
- Pharmacy – Purchases a recovery item and uses it on one target.
Level 5
- Hedge Risk – Halves the damage you suffer for 5 turns by spending money equal to half the damage.
Level 6
- Takeover – Spend your level times 50 pg to do damage to one target equal to the money spent.
Level 7
- BP Drink – Purchases a BP recovery item and uses it on one target.
- Small BP Drink (restores 1 BP): 1,000 pg.
- Medium BP Drink (restores 2 BP): 10,000 pg.
- Large BP Drink (restores 3 BP): 100,000 pg.
Level 8
- Speculate – Support ability that has a 50% chance to do double damage and a 50% chance to do no damage.
Level 9
- More Money – Support ability that lets you use the Merchant Specialty on other Jobs.
Level 10
- Millionaire – Used with the Send command to gift an amount equal to your level times 25 pg to a friend who summons this action using Summon Friend. Basically, it is a way to send money to a friend who plays this game as well.
Level 11
- Big Pharma – Restores one enemy’s HP and makes them pay pg equal to the amount of HP recovered.
Level 12
- Full Leverage – Doubles damage, recovery, and the HP/MP/BP required for actions for all allies and enemies for 5 turns.
Level 13
- Low Leverage – Halves damage, recovery, and the HP/MP/BP required for actions for all allies and enemies for 5 turns
Level 14
- Payoff – Spend money to buy off the enemy and end the battle. You still receive pg, experience, JP, and items.
Cross Job Tips
- Thief is helpful because you can steal items to get more money if you find yourself using too much money.
- Salve-Maker or Templar increases recover from items, so Big Pharma will give more money.
Special Moves
Dagger
- Level 1 – Use items 5 times.
- Infinity: Attack one. Raises Hit Count for all allies.
- Level 2 – Use items 10 times.
- Blade Storm: Attack one. Also raises Hit Count for all allies.
- Level 3 – Use items 15 times.
- Cross Divide: Attack one. Also raises Hit Count for all allies.
Combat Tips
Merchant is more of a joke character in combat. It is great for support and getting more money, but most skills are gimmicky. You will be burning through a lot of money if you use it to attack.
- On tough fights, use either Full Leverage, or Low Leverage. Full Leverage is good if you can take hits and want to end the fight quicker. Low Leverage is great for when you need to reduce the damage you take.
- If you really want a cheap victory, use Payoff. You end the battle and still get all the rewards.
